Thank you, Linda G. Hill for hosting Just Jot It January. Thank you, the many layered pensitivity for the prompt:
Pants
It is not as cold for us right now, in the Outback of Oregon. Last year seemed to be constant snow that didn’t go away until May. It’s raining outside today. I went outside yesterday in a T-shirt and no sweater or sweatshirt. BUT…
Early in this winter, my daughter made a statement on FaceBook that has stayed with me. You know how you wear a coat when it’s cold? What about that lower part? Ladies, don’t you find that the lower parts are still cold? Some people said that thermals were the answer or leggings. But honestly. You may already wear thermal tops and bottoms but still wear a coat. Why don’t we have pants that are like coats that when you get somewhere you can unzip and put them aside and not die from the heat inside? Why hasn’t this ever been invented? We could call them poats.
Anybody want to take this on? I’d love to not have a freezing bum or thighs when walking the dog. Let’s hear it for poats!
In these parts (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) we call those poats “snow pants”. Absolutely essential in winter not just for kids but adults, too. I own a pair.
So do you don your snow pants go to your office job or grocery shopping and then hang them up like you do your coat? I’m born and raised in sunny Southern California so I’m not trying to be funny. Naivete is my middle name in this case. I don’t ski or purposely go to the snow. But like I mentioned, last year we had snow from late fall to May. It didn’t melt. I didn’t know there were separate pants. I thought it was a snowsuit? Personally, I prefer swimsuits with temps of 80ish.
I prefer temps of about 75. I’m past the swimsuit age! As for the snow pants and when they are worn and what they look like, I wear them to walk the dog when the temperature dips below -10 C (14 F). Yes, I pull them over my tights, under my dress and then take them off when I get to work and hang them with my coat. You can by bib type of snow pants that look like puffy overalls but I make do with the pants. I also wear clunky Sorel boots. I gave up looking fashionable in the winter around 1980 when I moved to Ottawa from the west coast of Canada. Otherwise I would have lost fingers, toes, nose and earlobes long before now!
Thanks for taking me seriously and giving this answer. I was worried that it was a silly question. But I really didn’t know. Does your dog wear coats? I tried to get my dog to wear the coats that my daughter brought with her, but she refused. We didn’t stay outside long. I did buy her some mushers lotion for when it gets that cold again. I will have to go look into the snow pants (poats) and grab a pair for the really bad days. We don’t do minus often during the day. We do get some very cold nights. In fact, the old-timers here have talked about the time we hit -40. There is such a difference between 32 and the minus numbers I would hate to see it get colder. Makes one wonder how it was that humans chose to live in such cold places. As for bathing suits. I don’t wear them for others. I wear them to swim. And most places want you to wear something and don’t let you wear shorts and T-shirts or nothing at all. I just love swimming. Thanks for your comments!
YUP, the dog wears boots and a coat. Last week our temperatures were in the -31 F range and he wouldn’t have gone outside w/out boots and a coat. As it was it took us longer to get ready to go out than the amount of time we spent outside.
Brrrr. Glad the dog allows the warmth. I hope if it comes to really cold, mine will be more open to the coats and boots. When my kids were little there was snow where we lived and it was an all-day job dressing, drying, redressing, drying. Our poor dryer was going all day. And the littlest would get snow down her boots and be miserable but wanted to be out in the snow. The older three lasted longer but my daughter, who was just under two, just didn’t get it. Yes, she had a snowsuit. I just didn’t know there was such a thing for adults. Awful to learn about all this at 68. Where we raised the kids, it only snowed once in a while. We didn’t even have to leave the water running. It wouldn’t freeze only rarely got below 32.
Snow pants. We have them. We wear them.
Also, lined breeches 🙂
Since this all came up I started my research on Amazon. I didn’t know there was such a thing for adults. Duh!
Well don’t you live where it’s warm and dry A LOT? We didn’t use snow pants in Georgia.
I was raised and my children were raised where it wasn’t that cold. But last year, here in Christmas Valley, Oregon, the snow was on the ground from December 10 through middle of May. I’m not used to that and didn’t know what to do with it and I had a dog which made everything weird. I can curl up in my room and semi-hibernate but dogs need outside. So I had/have a lot to learn. I love how the snow looked. Wish we’d get some again. We had a little last month. But mostly rain this month. Hopefully, we won’t get those minus numbers before I have the chance to buy those poats! Thanks for educating this ole lady!
Yes, girl, get you some snow pants for walkin the dog. I highly recommend the kind that fasten like suspenders, they’re always easier to get off and on. Do not recommend the ones that have huge elastic at the top. It’s the opposite of how it seems, but it’s true.
Thanks for the advice! Will do!
