The DescendantThe Descendant by Linda Stasi
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dina Pearlman narrates this family drama. Was it Linda Stasi’s writing or the narration that started me thinking of cowboy hats and tumbling tumble weeds? Yet there was Italian dialogue from the main charaters in Sicily. I should have recognized some of it my childrens great grandparents were from Sicily. Their grandparents used to speak to me phrases. My mother-in-law played: how is this in Spanish? It was often quite close. Yet how much did I remember of my high school Spanish? My Duolingo lessons are to read not listen or speak. So I was glad that the Italian phrases were followed by the English translation. I think my in-laws were first generation born in America. So as the story went on, and I realized it was biographical, I could trace what I learned through osmosis my children’s heritage. That’s when the book became personal. I remember reasons my father-in-law moved from the east coast to the west, to get away from the mafia.

This Audible version made this nonfiction more accessable. I do plan to get the Kindle version so I couldlisten while reading. I need to see the Italian to get it better. And it won’t feel like a spaghetti western. It will feel like family.

By the way, by the end of the book I was ready to read it again. Now that I understand more about the characters and how they relate to the story in history I want to sink into the whole world created from reality to a literature that feels like fiction.

The Way HomeThe Way Home by Amanda Prowse
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a beautiful story! It isn’t often that stories are about elderly females. This character is so well developed. We see Lily-Bob’s past warts and all.

Amanda Prowse writes and narrates this charmer. Both excellently.

I don’t remember who recommended this. Thank you, whoever you are.
This was the Audible version. I hope you all get to give this a listen.

The Circle Trilogy (The Circle Trilogy #1-3)The Circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well, that was quite a ride!
Even though I was under the weather, I had another Nora Roberts story to keep my interest.
Sadly, I couldn’t find it as an audiobook. With all the Gaelic or ancient verbiage, a talented narrator would be so welcome. Still, Ms. Roberts can weave a tale.

I’m not usually into vampire stories, unless they knit, or have a sense of humor. But I learned to feel
for the old buzzard.

The cast of characters was confusing at first, but by the end tears were running down my face for them all. Another way a narrator or two could have helped.

This Kindle edition was provided by Libby.

Any Day Now (Sullivan's Crossing, #2)Any Day Now by Robyn Carr
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As I mentioned in the review for the first book, if you like the streaming series of Sullivan’s Crossing (Netflix, I think), you’ll like these books. The same love and concern for each other, living in a tranquil place of camping and hiking, and sweet characters combine to make a heartwarming story.

Roby Carr writes a beautiful story. This second book seemed to have a bit more repetition than may be needed, but it is easy to forgive. Terese Plummer narrates the tale well. I wish she could vary the character voices better. All the men sound the same; all the women sound the same. It is hard, sometimes, to know the person who is speaking. But Ms. Plummer keeps the listener engaged.

This book has quite a lot of suspense near the end. Thank you, Ms. Carr, for leaving us in a happy place regardless.

I found this second book on Audible. I want to go camping at Sullivan’s Crossing again soon. Next paycheck, I guess.

What We Find (Sullivan's Crossing, #1)What We Find by Robyn Carr
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Have you watched Sullivan’s Crossing? If you have you will feel like you are watching it the whole book. I love Robyn Carr’s writing style. It makes you feel comfortable. You see and smell the environment.

The narrator, Therese Plummer, is good, but it is hard to tell whose point of view she is portraying. All her males sound the same. Still she’s far better than text-to-speech.

I must admit that the order of the story is different than the show, but it works as well either way. My Audible version will be ready when I want to listen again. And now I have book two.

The Choice (The Dragon Heart Legacy, #3)The Choice by Nora Roberts
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I think Nora Roberts is now my favorite author and Barrie Kreinik is my favorite narrator. This Dragon Heart Legacy series has been a blast. I loved every minute of time I spent in that world with those characters.

Fantasies and romances get boring and predictable. Mostly predictible in that I know the writer is going to try to make the book more exciting. But I am not looking for exciting. I’m looking for connections and travel and quieter life with similar problems solved differently, or finding talents in being with folks who are supportive. And even if the one you love starts out gruff, he can learn new ways of thinking and acting.

As soon as I can I am going to buy the Audible version of this series. This version was from Libby. A great series I already miss.

Art Therapy and Music Therapy Bundle: (Expressive Arts, Movement Therapy, Art Therapy Trauma, Therapy Books)Art Therapy and Music Therapy Bundle: by Paul Catalani
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I was a music major, this was the direction I was heading. Music Therapy. That and art therapy make so much sense to me. Anything that can move your spirit and express emotions can bring the psychic mind closer to finding help.

If you want to know some basics about these theories, this is the book for you. It was a fast read. Well, listen as I used Kindle Text-to-speech. It did stir up my interests again.

I picked this one up in 2015; I’m only just now getting to reading and reviewing it. Sorry. I was worth the read, though.

The Becoming (The Dragon Heart Legacy #2)The Becoming by Nora Roberts
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Nora Roberts is becoming one of my favorite authors. Barrie Kreinik is one of the best narrators; not a single character sounds like any other, and each person’s emotions are clear. So their teamwork makes this one of the best fantasy series I’ve read in a long time. Book two develops the worlds and the conflict between the angry fae and those who prefer living peacefully.

Moving between modern Ireland and fae country seems seamless under the laws Ms. Roberts established in her novel. There doesn’t seem to be any jarring culture shock as the main characters move between them. That satisfies this reader who wishes to live in each land.

If you’re looking for a fun read/listen, pick up this series. Luckily, Libby had it. Now on to reading number three.

Self-Editing On A Penny: A Comprehensive GuideSelf-Editing On A Penny: A Comprehensive Guide by Ashlyn Forge
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

For NaNoWriMo and Camp Nano, I have written approximately 20 books, most of them 50K or more. But here I am, the worst editor ever. But I simply love the stories as they run from my brain to the keyboard. Hence, I need to read many more books like this to reach the next step.

This was an audiobook with Sandy Vernon (narrator), Faust Kells (narrator), and Ashlyn Forge (author and publisher). With the couple of voices, the listener stays focused on the topic at hand.

Can I say that this is all the right advice? No. I am not educated enough in the publishing end of writing. It does seem to have a lot of great ideas I will try to follow as I move along. But the title feels misleading, especially if we think we can get by on a penny. Certainly Ms. Forge’s book proves it can’t be done. Sadly, this retired person can’t afford a lot of the processes described here. Still, I did learn a lot and will keep trying to find answers.

Learn Faster, Perform Better: A Musician's Guide to the Neuroscience of PracticingLearn Faster, Perform Better: A Musician’s Guide to the Neuroscience of Practicing by Molly Gebrian
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I started this book a while back. I loved the aspect that it was written by a musician who minored in neuroscience.

Wait! Let me start over. When I was a kid, my mom would make me play a piece ten times. I never could keep track. She gave me ten buttons. Each play moved a button to the other side of the piano. Soon it wasn’t just a song but portions of songs. Trouble spots. The yelling from the kitchen for me to play it again, ten more times. I hated it. As soon as I could, I quit lessons. But by then I was a teen busy with a teen’s life.

So the first concept Molly Gebrian suggested took that even farther. Ten times perfectly.

I’ve been back to playing piano for about a year and a half. I started back by telling myself it had to be fun, or I’d get back to fiddling around with the recorder, Uke, or violin. They didn’t hold the psychological pull over me that piano had. I’ve ‘played’ up to forty minutes, even an hour, of FUN. Then I started reading this book. Yes, I had begun to work on bits, but I wanted to.

I put the book aside. But months later I decided it was the right concept. I may hate it, but I think Mom and Molly were right. But I will have to work up to it. It will still need to be fun. I’m a retired 76-year-old. Working hard is from the past.

The rest of the book had marvelous ideas I want to start to institute in my playing. In fact, I think much of it could be applied to other habits a person might want to develop in their life.

The version I have is Audible. Ms. Gebrian does her own narration. I plan to listen to this book often. There is so much I want to put into my piano fun.
