“Carefully, Beth cracked open the door checking for children who might be cowering nearby.”

How’s that! Bam! Covered it all! (See what I did there? Leftover B with current C.) The above is the first line I wrote today. One-Liner Wednesday is one of Linda G. Hill’s gems.
A-to-Z April Challenge starts out here. Today’s letter, if you hadn’t guess by now is:
CampNaNo can be found here. I’ve only added 14 words today making my total 4,017. I’m writing a novel called Haven in 3-D. This the cover for now:
It is in my series that starts with Haven my first novel doing NaNoWriMo. I’m mostly using yWriter to get me going. Enough commercials?
How’s your day? I better get busy lots of errands before I can write!
Maybe when I’m ready to write a novel I will get ywriter 😊
It works for me. It is also good for anthologies. It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of Word or other big word processors, but for NaNo and fast writing it’s great. And it can take you from outline to actual finished product (which I haven’t got to yet). Best part is that it’s free and invented by an actual author who has some fun books.
Well I have Word, but maybe because I’m a novice, I don’t really know how to use it. I know nothing about formatting or anything, I just start with a blank document, write my piece, proofread it and send it. Maybe that’s why I keep getting rejections 🤣
Word is wonderful in that you can download Grammarly into it and get a good grammar check and spelling fixes. And there are so many ways to set it up different types of documents. yWriter breaks it down into chapters and scenes that you can move around and not lose anything. It doesn’t have the grammar and spelling checks. What I do is save my daily progress to an RTF file. Later when I am not NaNoing (writing out the fast ideas without a lot of corrections) I pull one of the latest RTFs into Word and give it a good look over. After I’ve corrected a scene I move it back into yWriter..When I’ve done the whole novel I set it aside. The Haven novel I have in Wattpad I’ve done just that. Not sure if it is good. I think it is readable. I’m afraid I am blinded to problems because it all plays out in my head. Like a movie. By the way, I’ve heard if you are getting rejections you are well on the way of being an author–people have looked at it and it wasn’t what they needed in the moment. You are ahead of me there! I need eyes!
So far I’ve just submitted short stories, flash fiction, poetry, and essays. The closest I have come to anything longer was kind of a chap book. Maybe I should put it all together and polish it and see how long it is. I doubt if it’s even half of what I need, but I could expand on it and give it a proper ending. I commend you for doing the work it takes to write a novel. I didn’t do NaNoWriMo last year (and even when I did I was a rebel [writing for word count only]).
It would be fun to see a book of essays and poems. I might not be good at reading anthologies, if you’ve noticed I read long, long series type books and show. But I think those who are working or raising families might enjoy getting small bits at a time that have beginnings and ending. I have written rebelliously journaling and writing story as it popped up. As I understand it, that is a way to write a first draft. A lot of it won’t be in the story in the long run, but you gain so much by hooking into your own thoughts. This particular book is just story so far. Just when I think that I don’t know what is going to happen next one of my old character (from the 13-?) Haven books has something to say to me. I just am the secretary taking dictation. I love it when it works like that.
None of the things I’ve submitted for publication have been in book form. I just scout out magazines, blogs, and other pubs that pay for writing and try to get paid, I just need a lot more practice I guess. Weird thing is, I publish plenty on Medium publications and the readers seem to like my poetry ok, but I’ve never been successful anywhere else. Funny thing, I used to have no ability in that area, but Medium has really helped me grow! 😊
You are WAY ahead of me. I have submitted absolutely nothing! Since I don’t seem to write shorter things I wouldn’t know where to start or how do go about it. I love writing my books, I want to publish them eventually. But editing is something I know I don’t do well. I am taking a class on Udemy on editing and plan more. Maybe someday I will feel confident that I know what I’m doing in that end Meanwhile, I don’t have the money to find an editor. But Yay, you found Medium (is that a magazine or?? I’ve not heard of it) At least you have that small success. Big hugs to you and congrats!!! 😀
Ooooh, I am so excited to be able to offer you some help there! If you send me your email, I can share some ebooks I have on publishing (may come in handy for me some day if I ever write a book) and some places to get your writing published if you would like to start submitting to online magazines or print publications. Go to Freedom With Writing and Authors Publish Magazine to get started with a plethora of places to send writing projects. Hope Clark runs FundsforWriters, and Reedsy has a free mini course on how to write a novel plus lots of other classes and projects for online publication.
Medium is also a huge online source of inspiration, they are based out of San Francisco I believe, and if you just go online and check them out, you can literally find hundreds of places to be a part of the community, and now you can even make a little money through their Partner Program. I know you are super busy, but if you just take a little time to check some of these things out, you may benefit in the long run! Some of my favorite publications on Medium to write for are : The Weekly Knob, Chalkboard, and The Creative Cafe. There is an app that you download if writing from a tablet, or you can just go to Medium.com on the computer.
Also, lots of the writing I do is submitted through Submittable who also have their own website with a newsletter that provides even MORE places to submit your writing. Good luck to you and let me know how you get on. PS: I love Udemy and have been taking courses from them on and off for years! You would think I’d be rich by now with all my knowledge, but all I have is tons of filled notebooks (I’m not very organized) and a milewide stubborn streak. I want to do things my way, which is the long way I guess, lol. Also another place to take free classes is Skillshare.
One more thing, I would be happy to edit your book (I’m not a pro, but I’m very good at catching typos) if you want me to take a look. 🙂
Just let me know and thanks for the congrats and big hugs back to you!!
Oh, WOW! Thanks! I copy and pasted this into a word doc I can see on my desktop.
