Siren SpellSiren Spell by Cidney Swanson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Cidney Swanson has done it again! If you aren’t a fan of hers by the time you read the Rippler series or the Saving Mars series, I don’t know what to say. She definitely made it into my favorite authors category by those two series. But this one book stands alone. I don’t think it’s going to be a series. It could be I liked the characters enough. But the ending was too satisfying to need to know more.

Not long ago I read an illustrated children’s book about mermaids. So I was still in the mood to read more about mermaids. This book did not disappoint me. But it wasn’t just about mermaids. It was about family, ballet, Russian immigrants, living with a single mom and a grandmother. It was about two sisters who were teenagers, who are somewhat typical as teens. It is always difficult being a teenager and it is always difficult to have a teenager. Teens need to become their own person and feel the parents are in the way. Parents just tried to guide their children as they always have. And so it is in this book. What I liked about how Cidney Swanson does it, is there seems to be no judgment from the author about either of those parts of a family. And there wasn’t a lot of angsty, teenage romance happening. The adolescent sisters seem to have a bit of common sense in their choosing of friends and boys. It felt more natural to me than a lot of these young adult books do.

It was fun too to notice that this book takes place in Oregon. Is it because I live here now that I notice It more?

If you’re looking for a little bit of fun check out Siren Spell. I loved it!

The Pipe Woman Chronicles Omnibus (Pipe Woman Chronicles, #6)The Pipe Woman Chronicles Omnibus by Lynne Cantwell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the best series I’ve read in a long time. It will go down as one of my favorites and I’ve decided that Lynne Cantwell is now one of my favorite authors. What is really fun for me is that I am focused on NaNoWriMo right now and I found this book a bit of a distraction. I had to wait until bedtime to read it because I needed my own story to run its course during the day. Even so, I spent many a long night reading. And I often woke in the middle of the night just because I wanted to read it. It was THAT good, for me.

I don’t like telling the story or getting involved in the story when I make my review. I always think a person can go look at the blurbs of the books to find out what it’s about. The most beneficial to me when I read reviews is, how did the person like it, how did it affect them? And how can they apply it to their lives? And I realize that some books are not to be read at any time because you have to be in a certain space in your head for them. But these books, this series, I can’t think of a time in my life when I wouldn’t have been excited reading them. Combine urban fantasy, mythology, theology, paganism, Native American culture in a story that captures the imagination and you have a winner for me. These books make you think, hope and have a bit of faith that others think like you do. And it is nice that the person that called this stuff “woo woo” is the main character that must live it as she learns about it.

I already miss all the characters and Ms. Cantwell’s writing style. I miss the plots within plots. I know I will seek out her writing again. Oh, and it was fun to learn that this series came out of the NaNoWriMo challenge. Woo Hoo! There’s hope for the rest of us struggling with the 30-word vomit.

Oh, speaking of vomit. Sorry, I have to say this. There was far too much throwing up of hands and all I could see was appendage-spewing. Some of the books in the series has it said only once or twice. But one of them it became a big distraction. Obviously that wasn’t enough for me to give the series less than 5 stars. As long as I don’t have to clean it up, I don’t mind. πŸ˜‰

Please pick these books up either singly or in the omnibus form. I was lucky to get the omnibus for free, but I still picked up the individual books and reviewed them just to add to my reading goal of 200 books, I only have 5 more to go! Go me! They are reasonably priced and well worth it, I think. Enjoy!

Annealed (Pipe Woman Chronicles, #5)Annealed by Lynne Cantwell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the best one of the series. But of course, it is! It ties up all the loose pieces. It puts you in the most precarious of positions and is the bravest of all. This book made me very happy that I started this series in the first place. Not that at any point I wanted to quit. Each book led me on a quest that I couldn’t let go of. I wanted to see what would happen. At times I felt it was way out there in what Naomi calls her best friend’s New Age ventures “woo woo”. But some thought into all of it makes if feel that these things aren’t talked about enough. In this last book, there is enough philosophy to make the concepts and fantasy combine to a realism one doesn’t expect.

Please, if you like fantasy, mythology, thrown in with theology and great characters and plot, read this series. There are many good points to chew on and think about long after this last book is over. By the way, I already miss the friends I made in these books. I want to know what happens next. But it was a satisfying ending.

Here’s my explanation of why writing faster than we “are comfortable” can produce fiction just as good (if not better) than a work that’s been written slowly and deliberately.
