Did you know that literary talent and story talent are not the same thing?
Literary talent is the use of words. It’s the ability to create beautiful sentences and spin a stunning metaphor. It’s the language of imagery, the emotion of a carefully placed consonant, crafty dialogue, and gorgeous descriptions.
But according to Robert McKee in his book Story “literary talent is common.” Where as story talent (in his opinion) is rare. He goes on to say that “literary and story talent are not only distinctively different but are unrelated, for stories do not need to be written to be told. Stories can be expressed any way human beings can communicate. Theater, prose, film, opera, mime, poetry, dance” (27).
Story talent is rare.
But what is story talent? Well, it’s everything else you are telling the story with. It’s the underlying life that the words evoke. It’s what you’d tell…

Creative Writing with the Crimson League
Television and film constitute an art form heavily related to fiction in book form. Sure, tv involves other elements–most notably a visual and auditory element that traditional books can’t provide–but storytelling is storytelling.
That means we authors can learn a thing or two by watching old episodes of “Cheers,” “Friends,” and “Frasier.”
One thing you might know about me (or might not, if you’re new to my blog) is that in addition to writing fantasy and reading fantasy literature, I have a real love of sitcoms.
Sitcoms are wonderful vehicles for a writer to consider character and story development (as well as take a quick break from life and get in the day’s deep belly laugh, if you’re lucky).
So I wanted to take today to do something a little different than my normal blogging routine. I wanted to write a list of characterization tips I’ve picked up from my…

There has been no further writing on my Camp NaNo novel. 😦 I know. But then I do have a bundle of reasons and excuses.
I could present this as a multiple choice test, but there are serious reasons not to do this. First of all, remember the friend who I requested prayer/positive thoughts/Reiki for? Yeah. Well. I got the call that he was dying and my best friend asked that I come be with her in his final days. I spent most of the night at the hospital with her. The next day another friend and I went in to see them again. My dear friend looked worse and his wife said that they would be pulling the proverbial plug soon. I wasn’t able to stay the day, the friend who brought me and I were both having health issues of our own, so we had to go home. Midnight, or there about, I got a text that husband was with the angels.
Tom was a very special man, full of patience, kindness, goodness. He gave up clothes from his closet when my brother moved in with us having been homeless in FL. My brother came with only the clothes on his back.
Tom was an English teacher at a charter high school here. He was an important part of our writers’ group. He would offer his expertise when asked but mostly he was very encouraging listening to our attempts at creative writings. He managed a couple NaNoWriMos and won. Meanwhile from the time he learned of NaNo he introduced his students to the concept and many finished the lowered word-count and a few surpassed us all.
He would bring chocolate to our groups, or other goodies, just because. For me, it often seemed he read my mind. I would be trying to say something or think of a certain word and he knew what I meant. He would intervene on these ‘senior moments’ ever so kindly. I was always relieved to know that someone understood my blathering. I miss him already!
So was it the sadness? Was it the stair climbing and walking all over the hospital? Or was it the cruel barometric pressure changes (the graph looked like a roller-coaster on steroids)? Whatever it was I am just getting over (I hope) one of the worse fibro-flares ever!
I missed a whole weekend that I could have been writing using Dragon Naturally Speaking. I can only use that when my stepson is at work. (Tiny apartment with very little privacy.) And this flare has been tough on my shoulders and arms, so typing was out.
Enough of the excuses? Okay. But I will have to expand my month of writing to probably mid-August. Because I know that the next few days will be about getting ready for the funeral and helping my friends where I can.
I have a dear friend in the hospital. I may not be able to get over to my blog for the next few days. We all hope for the best but the doctors aren’t holding out the same hope. Prayers, positive thoughts, Reiki, whatever your means to the higher powers are appreciated for Tom and his family. I’m going down to be whatever moral support I can be.
For those of us who have been there this will validate you. For those who have not, hopefully, this will educate both in how bad it can get for those with ADD/ADHD or others who need new ideas for keeping track of $$$$$
Puryears Ponderings (was ADDadultstrategies)

“I’m also terrible with money. My dad had me write down every penny I spent, including cash…that was extremely difficult for me, but it did show me some major “leaks” that I’ve had to fix. Now I keep better track of my debit card usage, and my overdrafts have gone from 5-10 per month (YIKES!) to almost none. We’ve also worked on paying bills FIRST when I get paid, so now instead of paying my utilities when they threaten to shut them off (or when they DO shut them off!), I’m able to get them paid when they’re due or even a few days before. I’m still working on the impulse spending, but at least if I pay my bills first, I won’t be in such bad shape! I’m glad to know that I’m not the only intelligent person who understands money concepts from a logical standpoint but still struggles…

Reblogging from dreampunk geek! Awesome voices!
Been busy, life and all that stuff. Going to be busy for the next month due to work, but I do have things to share and post.
…like this little piece of awesomeness! Pure freaking awesomeness! The song “Diamonds” by Rhianna is great to begin with, but this cover by Steam Powered Giraffe is seriously addicting. I’ve got it stuck on repeat while I bust out this mountain of work.
