Not as Productive Today

because I took the time to cut my hair:

Keeping on…

Steady As She Goes

Still Going!

Today’s wordage brought to me by NaNo YouTube character development games. I love working with the YouTube word sprints and the like. It really helps me with the story.

FYI

So I not only finished my first edit for Haven, I started on my next revision. Maybe there is hope? It’s funny because I wrote this so long ago that as I read I got excited as I go to parts I had forgotten about. I used this last round to use Grammarly. I know that doesn’t fix it all but it makes it more legible. There will be more writing to get it the way I think it will read the best. But I have to be careful as I have written 12 (at least) books on this series so I don’t want to stray too far away.

I have put the whole thing as it is now in WattPad. I would love some constructive critiques, either on that page or here or send an email if you choose. There are places I need the questions asked or gentle shoves in right directions.

Lousy Illegal “L”

After my lousy poem yesterday to catch up with the illegal alphabet blogging, and lousy weather and lousy lazying around NOT walking, I have very little to say.

I have been editing my first book. Until I reached a horrid sentence and can’t seem to find a creative way around it. So instead of showing you what it is, I will sneak in this tidbit: I’m editing my first book!

I wrote Haven in the March following 9/11. Actually, I made it a NaNoWriMo as I started on the Ides of March and finished on the Ides of April. Except I didn’t finish it until November the same year  (2002) as there was a move involved and a lot of stressy things going on.

Haven started as I was riding the train on my daily commute to Irvine. During that time there were a lot of times the train wouldn’t continue on to LA. for fear of terrorists, etc. I sat there and wished, “If only there were a planet…” and that wish was strong enough to pull out my Palm Pilot and portable keyboard and started writing.

I have been told there is not enough tension in this book. But taking that wish, I was avoiding tension. These days I seek less tension as it seems everyone wants to blame each other, argue or hate each other. I think it is nearly worse than the atmosphere of 9/11. That was why I finally pulled it out and started working on it again. Then that lousy sentence! But editing is what I’ve chosen to do for CampNaNo. So…

If anyone is curious you can find the first 8 chapters here. I hope it isn’t Lousy.

Thanks to Linda G. Hill  for the inspiration to write every day and to Ruth  for the prompt.

Indelible

I am a sloppy writer. It is why I hate writing letters by pen and ink. My cursive isn’t too bad but I often make mistakes and end up scratching out misspells or words that are ahead of where I’m at in writing. I like pencils with erasers because I can fix said mistakes. No indelible marks there.

I remember when I discovered the typewriter. I had an old Underwood as a kid. I loved it. I learned quickly how to cross things out with the forward slash or X. I was so happy when I learned about the pen and typewriter erasers. But those made holes in the paper. Later we had Whiteout. But it still left a nasty look to the paper.

Then I discovered these:

I don’t know how to make the picture happen or if it does show up just with the link but these pens are so nice! My only excuse for not writing is sitting still and doing it! No more indelible mistakes! Need to order more soon!

30 Day Novel (How to write a book in a month)30 Day Novel by Tara Maya

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a book I’m going to have to read again and again. It is chock-full of ideas both light and serious in the art of writing.

As some of you might know I’m attempting to do JuNoWriMo. I hadn’t planned on doing this but it been a while since I put out the effort for NaNoWriMo and I missed writing like that. Like what? You may ask. Like a crazy idiot who’d just vomits words. When ideas fly around your head and make you crazy. When plot-bunnies plot to kill you. Yeah, I’m not sure why I’m doing it either. And with two days of thunderstorms where the electricity goes out, I’m two days behind now. But I think I could make up two days.

I did one novel where I outlined the socks out of it long before I started writing in November. That book turned out to be the very best book I’ve written so far. So as much as I enjoy the creativity of seat-of-your-pants writing I like to have a bit of a plan as I go into it. Then if some crazy ideas take hold of me I know how to find my way back to the plan.

Tara Maya’s 30 Day Novel works using outlines and storyboards and other great ideas. Some of these ideas I have tried before and they didn’t work quite so well as I would’ve wanted. But she spells out the process in a way that I can understand and I may institute some of these ideas in my plans, maybe for November’s novel. It’s kind of too late for this one. Although if I get too far behind for JuNoWriMo, I may institute some of these ideas for Camp Nano in July.

This is a quick read and the author keeps it moving along. I highly recommend it to all writers to glean what they can from it.
