Elphie Goes Trick or Treating (Elphie Books Book 3)Elphie Goes Trick or Treating by Hagit R. Oron

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received this book free of charge from the author. Thank you!

Do you have a child that is afraid of masks or other aspects of Halloween? I remember when my first was afraid of masks. The one that frightened him was made of rubber. I turned it inside out and said it was made of rubber. Then I picked up other things around the house made of the same substance. I don’t think it helped at all. This little story might have helped.

I loved how the parent let the little guy go out without his mask just so he could still have fun wth his friend. When the child got used to how everyone responds to the fun of the evening he decides for himself that wearing a mask is okay. It is always better to let the child come to his or her own healthy conclusions than forcing an issue. Wise messages are here.

I think that the only problem I had with the book was that it was written in first-person. For some reason that was jarring. I tried to imagine reading this story to a child reading the “I” statements would seem to take a child out of the story. If it is meant to be an early reader that might work. But books like this I would want to read aloud to my children long before they learned to read so we could talk about the subject matter.

Still, I do think this is a cute book. I love the little elephant, Elphie.

Bravo and ElphieBravo and Elphie by Hagit R. Oron

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh, what a delightful little book! It speaks to the shy one in all of us. Scared of something? Try to help someone else out of their fears and suddenly you are set free. This would have been a great book for my offspring when they were tiny and afraid.

Beyond the adorable illustrations, this gem offers plenty of conversation starters. Can elephants really climb up the slide steps? Would an elephant be friends with a rat? I remember a Mythbusters show that demonstrated how the big beasts seemed to shy away from mice. But it could just be that elephants care for their little friends of the plains and don’t want to hurt them. Who knows?

Of course we could talk about the main message of being afraid and thinking of ways to help others get over their fears. Even as adults, don’t we need that reminder every now and then?

Elphie and Dad go on an Epic adventure (Elphie's books Book 1)Elphie and Dad go on an Epic adventure by Hagit R. Oron

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A few days ago I got an email from the author, Hagit R. Oron, asking if I would read and review her children’s book. I replied I would love to, especially since the last two books I was reading were a bit overwhelming on the emotional scale of things. I needed something light to break up the heavy.

So tonight I read this little gem. It was very well done. I loved the pictures of the daddy elephant and his son, Elphie. I loved how the author suggests that parents make an adventure out of mundane trips like going to the store. I love the other parental tip about not getting hung up on the cell phone while out on said adventure. I loved how the child was able to set up the adventure he wanted to have. And how they ended with everyone having had a good time all around. Well done!

Thank you, Hagit R. Oron, for gifting this book to me and letting me in on the adventure.
