The Book of the Unnamed Midwife (The Road to Nowhere, #1)The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book kept me awake! I couldn’t stop reading. Meg Elison’s writing was engaging; the main character was believable and interesting. The plot was well thought out and much more plausible than zombie-apocalypse. It is a similar idea in that masses get sick and die, but no biters. It just sucks because a lot of people die. Mostly women and newborns. Again, it’s possible.

With that scenario, the story is told in many ways. There is a third-person point of view. Then the main character writes in her journal bringing it to first-person. Thrown in are chapters about other characters or even globally how others are dealing with a new world with very few women. And though I read this Kindle Unlimited version with Whispersynch to the Audible, I found myself READING as much as listening because even the fonts were different and interesting.

But without the narration by Angela Dawe, the book becomes less. Angela’s acting was flawless and added a lot to the story. I think this book is read best the way I did it as all the layers the author intended are there.

Though this was book one and you know there is more, there was no cliffhanger. You reach a natural somewhat comfortable ending. I was just excited to know there was more! I have already downloaded the Audible and Kindle Unlimited of book two. I can hardly wait to get to it!

Against the Current (Zombies! #2)Against the Current by R.S. Merritt
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was the second book that was also on Kindle Unlimited. I enjoyed it as much as the first, maybe more as there were fewer mistakes. Starting a sentence with Him is never a good idea unless you’re baby-talking with an infant. And only if you don’t care how that child learns to talk. Luckily that only happened at the end of the book so I managed to actually enjoy the story more.

As one can’t really predict who might die or live in the Zombie Apocalypse, I will try not to take offense at who died and who didn’t. I certainly won’t give spoilers, as much as I wish I could.

My biggest problem is the cliffhanger. Truly I think this would be a better book if sold all as one. I’m not at all thrilled to wait until the next is written. Even if it is free I don’t want to read it. I will assume the right people survive and all becomes good in the world after.

This is not to say that others wouldn’t love these two books. There is enough to make the reader engage and hope for the best. The characters are nicely developed and one wishes them all a good life!

A Small World (Zombies! #1)A Small World by R.S. Merritt
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Shreaking, fast running zombie. Yikes! At least they aren’t all skinny and slow. They have differences like the people they were before the virus. That’s my biggest complaint of The Walking Dead. If 70% of Americans are overweight, how would all the zombies become skinny? I’ll take that diet! LOL!

It isn’t the zombies that pull me into books about zombies. It is the survivors. You probably don’t get a choice who you spend the apocalypse with. Our ways of defining each other, style, size, shape, gender, age, etc., are wiped away. Good and bad show up. The good guy isn’t really when you put him against the zombies, the bad guy comes up with ways to save everyone. Moment by moment the apocalypse tests people. As I read/watch these kinds of stories I jump in and wonder how would I react, how would other people handle it all? Since the author gave us characters and their traits we are surprised and yet not at the reactions of trying to survive. I think there is a wisdom to how people can’t be enclosed in a box of what you think might happen. It is often the people that are scary, maybe more than the monsters.

In the above character arch, I find this book interesting. Mr. Merritt seemed to try and change things up to what you might expect in these kinds of situations. And he wrote the story in such a way that the reader doesn’t want to put the book away for the night.

BUT narratives that say Him and take me right out of the story. There were a few places an editor needed to be stronger. AND I’m not an editor! I usually don’t see oopsies. I get caught up in the story and rarely notice the problems. So if I see it, I am hesitant to recommend the book to my more astute friends.

My biggest problem is not finishing the book. Yep! Cliffhangers! HATE THEM!!! If I didn’t already have the next book from Kindle Unlimited (how I got this one) so I could move on I wouldn’t have moved on. If I had bought this, I would not buy the next!

By the way, are you being paid by Disney? It seems there are a lot of references along the way. I felt those rather out of the blue and weird. I suppose if the person is from Orlando, FL or Anaheim, CA, that would be a big part of your life, but most aren’t lucky enough to be near those, even in the apocalypse!

We Witches Three Books 1-6We Witches Three Books 1-6 by Humphrey Quinn
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I’m pretty sure I’ve read these books before, at least the first three or four. I can’t find my review anywhere. I think I felt the same thing for the books then as now. There are aspects of the story I like. Witches and librarians (bookstore owner). The things I hate are too many males overpowering in any way the females. There are too many brothers trying to hold down the young witch. Plus a vampire who feels he should protect her. Then a jealous boyfriend. And that teen angst. UGH! Does he love me? What if I do this will he still love me? What garbage. Books should teach girls to be strong in their own individualism.

Don’t get me wrong. I stayed with it and kept reading. There is enough going on that the reader gets into the tension of what will happen next. And this six-book combo was free on Kindle Unlimited. So I went with it.

One last thing I HATE is cliff-hangers! I would have just left it at that had the next set of books cost even a penny. But it was also free on Kindle Unlimited. But I have a ton of books to read before I can get around to it.

The Victory GardenThe Victory Garden by Rhys Bowen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I think I’ve read this story before. I know I haven’t. Though I enjoyed it, I found it trite. Again, don’t take this as a dismissal. There are many good qualities here. Young women should read books that speak to women in history. It’s good to see how far we’ve not come while learning what has improved.I

While I can’t rate this five stars, which means I will always remember it and may read it again, it does come up to maybe a 4.5. It was well written. It kept me interested, I wanted to know what happened next.

I love reading stories like this. Women during the world wars and how they had to do the men’s jobs. How stories of witches and unplanned pregnancies could cause gossip but not as often as peacetime.

So, please if you want a good read. Pick this one up. It is free of you have Kindle Unlimited.

Extra YarnExtra Yarn by Mac Barnett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a review for the Audible version of the book. I can’t afford to buy the paperback or hardback right now but couldn’t wait to read it as I heard it was exquisite.

I love picture books. They inspire my inner artist. Still… I’m truly surprised to see how much fun just listening to the story without pictures was.

Narrated by Nicola Barber with accompanying music made this a beautiful story about never-ending yarn. Don’t think that this magic was lost on this knitter. I almost have that wonderful situation. I get to knit from donated yarn. I make comfort items for the homeless, homebound, cancer patients and others. It is a win-win craft for me. I get to knit forever and other people get warm hats or toys or scarves… I haven’t knitted a sweater yet, but it would be fun to yarn bomb everyone and everything around me!

I’m hoping to finally READ and enjoy the pictures in the book someday soon, but this Audible version does hold its own.

TimecasterTimecaster by Jack Kilborn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh. My. Goodness! Whew! That was a ride! Any of you old enough to remember E-tickets? Yeah, that kind of ride. So much fun, yet keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Was it the fantastic narration of Patrick Lawlor or did the author, Jack Kilborn just have that many funny bones in him? Whichever, or the combination, I had so many laugh out loud moments while reading that I am glad I was at home. I can imagine others in a library, looking at me like I was crazy. As it was I had to not let my husband know the joke as he plans to read this next.

The setting is in the far future and the main character, Talon Avalon, on of the last peace officers, one of the few that can operate the time machine to help solve crimes, is running for his life. Someone has stolen his identity, or so it seems. Now he is wanted for murder among other crimes.

This book takes place over two days. Our hero goes through everything, it seems. The orgy where he is an unwilling participant is the funniest. Don’t ask how that happens. You have to start at the beginning.

I do need to warn you that as I mentioned above, there are a couple sex scenes and much adult humor and language. But if you are mature enough (or have been raised with brothers and raised sons) none of it will shock you and may actually tickle your own funny bones.

Hurray for Kindle Unlimited with Whispersynch. That’s how I found this book. And now I am off to book two: Timecaster: Supersymmestry.

Here’s to your own enjoyment reading these!

Red SummerRed Summer by Antoinette J. Houston

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I picked up this book through Kindle Unlimited. I read other reviews and thought it would be great. Yet at 11% I was ready to stop reading and move to another book. After all, I have tons to choose from. But I decided to switch on my text-to-speech and set it on fast and continued. You see, I never cared, much, for any of the characters and with so many, I kept getting lost as to who was who.

Rita was, of course, my favorite. I loved that she was not the timid, white, girlie-girl. Black and full of fire. Once she let the fire go I was liking her more and more. Why is it that authors don’t write in color more often? Rita is a tough girl! But not to show she’s tough. As with most kids, that’s just a guise to keep from showing her vulnerabilities.

My second favorite was Inny, Ingrid. She was a sweet friend. Or was my second Wil? He was very loving and true.

So obviously, I did get into the characters after TTS took over. Still. With all the action that takes over, I was left panting from the constant action–all in present tense, by the way. I think it works when there is a lot of action. But in the beginning it just added to the confusion.

The context of the story was interesting. A group of young people doomed to relive their teen years again and again. But anyone who has been through those years once, and lived, isn’t likely to want to do it repeatedly. After adulthood hands you its freedoms and responsibilities it seems the angst of adolescence is left behind with the music and fashion best memorialized in school annuals. So reading about this ‘Groundhogs Day’ scenario for a gang of young people, made me tired. Well, tired and thankful it never happened to me.

Still… although I think there will be a sequel, I don’t think I will look for it. I’m sure others will love it as they have this book. At any rate, I wish Antoinette J. Houston all the best!

Dana's Dilemma: The Morelville Mysteries - Book 3Dana’s Dilemma: The Morelville Mysteries – Book 3 by Anne Hagan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ask me! Go ahead, ask me why I’m just waking up at 3 in the afternoon. Anne Hagan! I blame her! The third book is the charm-er! I couldn’t stop reading once I started. Granted I started after midnight, but the rest I blame on the author!

There are some hot, hot, hot scenes! Whew! Equal to those is the story that never stops. I feel the two main characters are now well fleshed. Oops, not the word I wanted. Well-developed, hm, that doesn’t say it quite either. Real. Yes. That’s it! They’re real. I feel I know them well, like friends. Strong, smart people keep the three books moving but, this one is the very best of all.

Oh, and for those not given to enjoying the erotic moment or two, there is enough action and on the edge-of-your-seat excitement, well, to keep you from putting the book down and going to sleep when you should!

The sad part? I have to wait until Ms. Hagan give us another! And I can see the direction of the flow of Dana and Mel’s lives. They are alive, right? They aren’t just in my imagination. Right?!

I want to thank Amazon for having this book and others on Kindle Unlimited. I can’t always afford books now that I have “retired” (read: disability). I just hope that the author gets paid well when they allow the use of KU.

Again, way to go, Anne Hagan!!!!!!

Busy Bees: The Morelville Mysteries - Book 2Busy Bees: The Morelville Mysteries – Book 2 by Anne Hagan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I hate when I finish a book too early to go to sleep yet too late to write a review. But I’ll do the best I can nearly 24 hours and two books finished later.

Isn’t Kindle Unlimited the bomb? Do they still say that? What I mean to say is I am happy I am able to pick and and read some books even when I haven’t the money to buy them at the moment. Having read Morelville’s first book, Relic, I was curious as to what would happen to the new lovers. The last book didn’t end with a cliffhanger but the author, Anne Hagan, included the first chapter in book two at the end of book one. I like that. It did make me want to read more.

As the sheriff, Mel Crane, discovers yet another murder her lover, Special Agent Dana Rossi, is recovering from being shot in the leg in the last book. Sheriff agrees to let Dana move into her home to recuperate. Jumping the quick lesbian relationship to skip some levels, straight to the moving in. “Dating” will have to wait until later.

Except for a few editing errors, this book read quite well and kept me engaged, wondering how in the world they will catch the bad guys. Within the mysteries, are realistic characters who seem to have realistic relationships. And I hate to see my new friends go away. Luckily, I have book three ready for when I can get to it. I look forward to more!
