Shōgun (Asian Saga: Chronological Order, #1)Shōgun by James Clavell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this way back in the 80s. It was a big, thick paperback. I loved it. Then I watched the movie (or was it a series?) with Richard Chamberlain. Then I was blown away. I was already crazy about Mr. Chamberlain—so much so that, as an early teen, I’d sneak a mirror into the bookshelf in the hall at just the right angle so that even though it was past my bedtime, I could watch Dr. Kildare. I still think I got away with it.

What I loved about every iteration of Shōgun was the passion, history, culture, and language presented. Richard Chamberlain is going to be hard to beat in his portrayal of Anjin-san, especially in the scene where he is committing Seppuku. But in this Audible edition, I felt that passion through the reading by narrator Ralph Lister.

I have gotten used to Mr. Lister’s reading, but I think this book needs separate actors. I absolutely hate hearing a man do a female voice. It always sounds demeaning to women. And all the men sound similar to each other.

Still, since I am taking Japanese on Duolingo I feel I understand more than the last time I read the book. I’m looking forward to book II and the new streaming series.

Throwback Thursday #41 – First Crush

Welcome back to Throwback Thursday, the brainchild of Maggie and Lauren. This week it is Maggie’s turn to pick our theme.

Your First Crush.

Who was your first crush? First names only!

Richard Chamberlain (Dr Kildare) Sorry it would make no sense saying Richard.

Was this a celebrity or someone you knew ?

Celebrity

How old were you?

12

How old was your crush?

An adult

Did you let your crush know you liked them? If so, how?

No. But had I known how to let him know how strong it was… I could’ve been killed for propping up a mirror system so I could watch from bed, where I was supposed to be asleep. Every week. I don’t think my folks ever found out.

Did your crush like you, too? How did you know?

Sadly, no. And now I realize I wasn’t his type if far too young.

Did you get teased by your family for having a boyfriend or girlfriend?

Nobody knew.

Did you feel like you were in love or did you think it was simply a fleeting crush?

I had no clue. I was pretty naive as a kid. Maybe still.

Was this just a temporary crush or your first heartbreak?

I’m still not over him.

When you think of that person today, do you have fond memories of them?

Absolutely!!!!!!

Shattered Love: A Memoir
Shattered Love: A Memoir by Richard Chamberlain
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Let me tell you a story. There once was a young woman who was in junior high and high school who LOVED Dr. Kildare. Alas, it was on a school night. Her parents made her go to bed early. But this young lady was so clever that going to bed didn’t stop her from watching her favorite show. You see the television was at the far end of the living room and could be seen from the end of the hallway. Well, there was a bookshelf there, and she set up a mirror so as to watch Dr. K from her bed. When he was over she would slip out of bed and remove the mirror so her parents would be none the wiser. Yes, that clever girl was me. And that was only the start of my crush on Richard Chamberlain. For years I kept track of his birthday. I enjoyed all the miniseries that he did.

I think my favorite scene was that of Anjisan attempting to commit harikari. What passion he was able to show! Why didn’t he bring that moment into this memoir?

As a memoir this was less than what I wanted. As much as he told us his problem in life had been being aloof, I found that it remained in this book. And pride was still evident. I don’t mind that he has come out as gay, he is an actor, and it is none of our business what he needs in his bedroom. I still love his work on the tele or big screen.

Now, had this book been labeled as a metaphysical healing book, I would have enjoyed it better. I was reminded of a path I have left behind and plan to get back into meditation and opening my heart chakras. Then again, the title of the book is Shattered Love–oh yeah and A Memoir. So maybe I was cheated by my own expectations? I had set this to three stars but now that I think on it I think I must give it four. I may just read it again for the spiritual reminders.
