Dragon NaturallySpeaking

As of right now, I have 18,450 words. I managed a little over 3k yesterday. I used Dragon Naturally Speaking to give my the larger word count. Today I don’t have that “cone of silence” or privacy, that I need to dictate my novel as my step son is on his week end. My next day to dragon is Friday.

Today was my writers group so I added a thousand or so to the story. I hope to get another thousand before I go to sleep. Though I know I should be at the halfway point, 25k, since we are halfway through the month, I allow that I did start late and may not actually finish until mid-August at this rate.

I like to write in yWriter. Well, I actually start my character development in WriteItNow as they have a lot of questionnaires to get a better handle on the new people. It also helps me with the world building. Then I move into yWriter. It helps me stay on some kind of outline as I go as it makes you think in chapters and scenes and POVs. It helps me stay organized in other words.

I was calling the novel Lost in Time. I have the beginning of the novel under my “Stories” tab. I think I will change the title to Locket(s) in Time as that is the mechanism that moves the characters back and forth in time. I probably won’t post more of the story until I get to the editing part in a month or so.

By the way, this story will not be G or GP. It will be  talking about adult subjects and adult situations. Some of them are hot but others are ugly secrets that society has tried to hide between family members. I don’t mind writing a sex scene or two but those stories of dangers and angers are very hard to write. I didn’t know where this story was going to go when I started but the main characters and the antagonist has directed this from the beginning. I just need to write the truth they tell me.

Well, that was more than I planned to write in the blog. I needed that wordage in my story! Think I’ll copy and paste it into yWriter under a new scene called Blog. 🙂

Camp NaNo

http://campnanowrimo.org/

I blame my writing group. I blame my friend who is the head of the writing group. Two weeks before July, or maybe it was three I can’t remember, my friend gave us a couple prompts. You can see the prompts and the story that resulted if you click on “Stories” on this website. There was a third prompt last Wednesday night that added more to the story. I haven’t posted that yet. In fact, I decided to use that story as the basis for another NaNo. Camp NaNo started July 1. As I watched the story unfold, I’ve gotten pretty excited about it.I think I have a novel here. So… I rewrote what I had before and started adding to it. As far behind as I started, like yesterday, I still managed to be right where I’m supposed to be if I were doing NaNo. So last night I made up my mind. That’s what I’m going to.

This is the first novel I’ve written that didn’t include my sentient planet of Haven. That doesn’t mean She might not come in and join me in my writing but so far I see no signs of Her. I will probably make a new title of this one because Lost in Time probably has been done 1 million times but it’s the working title for now.

At least this time I have Dragon Naturally Speaking working with me so my fingers and my back won’t hurt so much. That’s what I’m writing with right now.

So without further ado, I’ll stop procrastinating and go over to my writing program and get busy. 🙂

Interesting read. Some great ideas. Nice to know that reading level less that fifth grade are best as mine seems stuck at third grade since menopause. 🙂

Analysing Agatha – How to become the best-selling novelist of all time.

How Being Tired Can Make You a Better Writer.

I just read the above article and realized that I rarely write when I am tired. One reason, is that my characters seem to reflect my physical needs. When I am hungry my characters sit down and eat, when sleepy they go to sleep, when the needs lean erotic… Well, without those pesky characters doing anything worth writing about, I tend to follow their lead.

Ms. Lamb, also, brought up the fast writing idea that pushes the critical thinker down so creativity can thrive. I can’t imagine writing a book in two weeks, called Fast Draft I have 10 novels written through NaNoWriMo which stands for National Novel Writing Month. Which is a misnomer now, as it is International, usually done in November. The idea is you write a 50K-word novel in 30 days. So my first was written between the Ides of March through the Ides of April. I wasn’t successful with the word count so I started where I left off, in November and gained 50K more words. Another time I wrote a ‘NaNo’ in June. That worked well. The next year the NaNo site set up Camp NaNo, which didn’t work well for me. Mostly I do well with the encouragement of writing friends. But sometimes I find other people to be a distraction. Sometimes the goal must be internalized and unannounced to others. In that case, maybe a two week write-a-thon would work for me.

On the other hand, the reason my novels are not published is EDITING. The verbal vomit is as messy to clean up as the yuck the cat leaves on the floor. I want to point to someone else to ‘clean it up.’ I wonder if there is an equivalent  of the stuff that amusement parks use for people messes, for writers?

I receive Kristen Lamb’s Blog through email. I always find a nugget to chew on. If you haven’t been by, check her out.
