A to Z Challenge, K

Kali is one of my favorite ‘K‘ words. This poor ole girl is slowing down like me. Arthritis makes her a bit of a ‘Hop-a-long Cassidy’. That’s only when she walks or trots. When she gets happy she can gallop like the wind. She barely touches the ground. I wish I could jog like my daughter because I think Kali would love that so much. I hope the wind dies soon so we can get outside for real walks again.

Knitting, loom or needle is another favorite. Here are a couple of Works In Progress. A pair of charity socks, a charity hat, and a charity toy.

Keto is a new word for me but I am trying to learn how to make it work for me especially with my Intermittent Fasting. Knowledge is power and I am knuckling down to growing healthier. The key seems to be getting your body to use fats instead of sugars for energy.

It seems my favs are four lettered. One to embrace for all, though, is Kindness.

Just another beautiful sunset. Yawn. Just kidding. I feel so lucky to have this view from my living-room.

I wish my cell took a true picture. This isn’t as gorgeous as what my eyes saw.

In thinking of ‘J‘ words January came to mind. Doesn’t that seem years away? Hey, remember Just Jot It January? Ah, that was fun. I know we still had up our Christmas tree. That dim, cold memory needs to go away. Let’s stay focused on the future, June and July! That’s more my speed. Let’s just pray it isn’t another fire season. The news for our area is all about the draught.

In this journal, I like to keep track of my writing and editing. I am nearly finished with the goal of 25,000 words to edit. I feel it is doing its job to jumpstart my jam. 21,957 words thus far!

Suddenly I am finding the need to report my reward games. I finished Love Story–Beach Cottage and am trying a new one, for me. Mystery Case Files The Black Veil. Since I’ve had it a while and never played it takes a bit longer to journey through its lands and find all the jewels. I’ll play as soon as journaling is complete.

This has been another Monday that I slept through writing group not realizing it was Monday. How it is that keeps happening? Napping is so juvenile! But nightly the ‘outside’ trips jack up my sleep. Having this sweet dog is sometimes harder than when I had 3 jobs: going to college full time, working full time ,and being a single mom of four. But I love her and ad-just<–that ought to count!

Well, it is time to get out the joystick, well ‘mouse’ is for ‘M’ day isn’t it?

Have a Joyous week all!

Caste: The Origins of Our DiscontentsCaste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The bestselling list on CBS Sunday Morning today put Caste at #3 of non-fiction books. I usually don’t end up reading things that are on those lists. But a couple of months ago during the Unitarian Universalist Zoom worship service, this book was highly praised and gently assigned as homework for the congregation. I found it on Audible and had a free credit so went for it.

Robin Miles narrates beautifully. Her voice and acting help keep the listener engaged. Even though this was one of the longest ‘reads’ I have indulged in of late. It has taken me several weeks to get through. For some books, I set the speed faster than normal and can follow a story quite well, but I loved Ms. Miles’s voice and found myself deeply involved in the caste education Isabel Wilkerson had presented so well that I left it at normal speed.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. If you feel ‘woke’ enough that you feel this will be elementary, you will find depths of information you may have not thought of. I remember as a child at church excitedly singing “Jesus Loves the Little Children, all the children of the world; Red and yellow, black or white, they are precious in His sight…” Yet hearing we couldn’t go to a certain park because the blacks were taking over. In a child’s mind, that seemed strange and I couldn’t believe that would stop us from going to the park. We lived in a very white area. There were few kids of color in school. As a kid, I didn’t think of what that meant. As a newlywed, my husband and I made friends with a mixed couple. Through them, we attended a dance and a big picnic where there were only three whites. Us. The dance was amazing until they invited me to dance. My shyness took over big-time. I can’t dance and it was obvious that our new friends were experts. The picnic was more intimate. A couple of women had beautiful cornrows. As a cosmetologist, I was fascinated with how they did that. We weren’t taught black hairstyles in my school. These gracious ladies laid down in the grass with me and showed me how to braid grass. It still amazes me that they could get the grass to stay braided. It was so short! No, I never did get good at braiding.

Anyway, I went into this book with these life experiences behind me and hearing that song worming its way through my head wondering how people have been treated so poorly by folks that claim to be Christians. I do remember learning about India’s caste system as a young adult and thought how it seemed we weren’t far from that here. But this takes all that to such depths of understanding I was wowed every night I was involved in the book.

Please if you get the chance, give this one a read.

I don’t know the difference between Streaming my Consciousness and blogging within the alphabet. I stream here because I am bad at keeping a journal by hand. Having these wonderful prompts moves me out of the ‘Dear Diary: today I breathed in an out’ syndrome.

Iceland, Ireland, Italy, all ‘I’ words I would love to see. Would northern Italy look any different than Iceland or Ireland? I bet they are all cold and snowy. Inland in the Outback of Oregon, it is cold again. Instead of going for mile long walks I sat here idle and shivering. Ugh!

If I don’t make this a short blog, I won’t get to the editing. And that is the only way I get to play my game as a reward. It took me three nights to finish Ravenhearst. Now I am playing Love Story — Beach Cottage. The game is the inspiration for doing the icky editing.

In case you were wondering what I was doing with the rest of my day, knitting and watching shows with my husband. I’ll show you the pics in a couple days when the items are more identifiable. I’m trying a new toy and still working on tons of socks, okay, maybe a couple pairs.

I am indifferent about a lot of things in the moment, especially the weather. But the way, my brother has been hitting the sagebrush out in our yard, I may be in love with our new patch of sand. That stuff had taken over during this past year making our place very vulnerable to fire. And the season is already starting.

best bro ever

Time to get off the blog and hit a few moments of editing so I can play before sleep. Ironic? Not so much. I just wanted to use the word.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “difference.” Whatever the word “difference” conjures first in your mind, write about it. Enjoy!

A to Z Challenge, H

Hello from CampNaNoWriMo!

How did I get here and why do I do it? Have you found yourself unable to quit something? I started writing a NaNo my first novel written in 30 days in which you should write 50,000 words, starting in November of 2001, post 9/11/2001. I was on the train commuting to work in Irvine, CA. I remember feeling deep sorrow and the thought, If only there was a peaceful planet out there, or some such wish. I couldn’t finish in November as we were getting ready to move. I did continue with the story between the Ides of March to the Ides of April. That planet gave me the name: Haven. This many years later I am still writing on the series that has taken over my life. I can’t even count how many novels I have worked on. I think it is about 15 now. As in the beginning I may start something in November, writing my heart out, mostly reaching the 50K but rarely do I reach the words ‘The End’. Spring brings me back to finish or edit. None of the books are ready for others to read. I may be great at throwing out the words and enjoying the story as it is revealed to me. Editing is not my specialty.

Having once again to be pulled in, this time with Pandamapocalypse that I wrote in 2020, is my Camp NaNo project. I am editing what I’ve written. Then my goal is to find ‘The End’ before the end of April. As of today I have edited through 20,360 words. I am getting to the part of writing near the end of November. The plot is missing nearly entirely and the words are mostly written for prompts. So a new outline is needed and figuring out where things go, then rewriting to give it all a cohesive feel. My heroes are doing their best to jump through the plot holes but I need to help them. I hope Haven gives me a hand as it is horrid hanging out in this writer’s hell. Soon I will join NaNoFinMo to learn hints to finish my novel.

Meanwhile, Hello and have a happy weekend!

Gorgeous view through dirty glass. The sun going down is the glorious part of the day. I am so grateful to have a view like this every day.

Gratitude continues with the editing progressing. 19,919 words processed so far. Before long I will be to the point of actually writing more on the story.

Gusty cold air prevented my taking walks two days in a row. I wish I had an indoor treadmill for these days. Grrrr!

Goodness will you look at the time? I am actually getting done early today. Maybe I will be able to finish my game and then finish reading my book. I HIGHLY recommend Caste by Isobel Wilkerson. I’m listening to it on Audible. Review to come in a couple days.

So without further ado and adding one more G:

good night

A to Z Challenge, E

Editing is not my favorite part of writing. But I am learning it is like doing dishes. Not my favorite part of eating a meal, ya know? So one way to look at that instead of an awful chore, it is the result of actually having something to eat. That is worthy of gratitude, you know? Editing means a whole lot of story came out and was a lot of fun watching the show in my head. The muse can’t help it if I can’t type it right the first time. That said my CampNaNo editing number is now 11,323. Enough of that. Pandamapocalypse is exciting for me. My chosen cover page below.

Energy was not my best friend today. I had another doctor’s appointment. That was fun. It’s sad when fun is going to the doctor. Everything was fine, just getting the yearly check-up tests done. My walk was a little later but that was extra difficult. It felt like I was pushing EVERY step of the way. Made a little over a mile. So another excellent ‘atta girl’ to me from me!

I’m so tired right now I can’t think of another E-word to save myself or even an elephant so I best go. I’m rewarding myself with a game of Return to Ravenhearst. I already found all the eyeballs, isn’t that gory? Not as awful as the spider that comes out of the doll’s ear. Take that! Two more e-words. I know another: Exhausted!

A to Z, D

Drape closing time of the day. Daytime is ending with a beautiful sunset. Unfortunately, the pinks and reds my eyes saw, don’t show up for the picture. Darn!

I didn’t take a walk today. It was so cold and the wind was blowing hard. I hate to admit it but I missed doing it. I am watching a lot of YouTubes about Keto and Doctor Jason Fung, Intermittent Fasting. They are helping me see more things I can do to get healthier. I don’t want to claim the word Diabetes for a D word, but can’t get away from it!

By the way, the dog isn’t happy with today either. Not only is she so depressed she is sleeping, she seemed to pull that picture out of focus. (Hehe)

Daily editing for CampNaNo still happened. 9592 words went through Grammarly and I fixed a few of the mistakes. I am still happy with the story and can’t wait to get my series out into the world. I hope my appointment with the doctor tomorrow will help me with my vision issues.

I am back in the crazies of What Day Is It Anyway? And only just now did I realize that this is Monday and once again I missed my writing group. I guess I need to start putting DATES on my calendar that I want to be aware of. Now that I have more going on in my life I may need to keep a diary again!

Sock Sunday

Finally finished the slippers. Pretty proud of these leftover bits. The perfect way to finish a beautiful Sunday.

I don’t know if I’ll get any editing done. I did take my walk. Kali is out cold on the sofa. Guess I wore her out.

Now onto Duolingo and early to bed.
