Ode to Joy. This is often a beginners song in whatever instrument you are trying out. Here is one of my favorite recorder teachers teaching the classic. I am using this video to teach myself to play it on not only soprano but also alto and tenor. Both of the latter are much harder on my hands than the higher squeakier soprano.

Sarah Jeffery

I’ve always been interested in codes and other languages. Maybe the beginning code of my life was music. As a five-year-old, I can remember more of my music lessons than kindergarten or even first grade. Music code was followed by alphabets and Dick, Jane, and Sally. Not only did I learn that code, in the boring sense of black and white, but reading became one of my favorite things.

When I was little, I had a toy piano like Schroeder, with color coded music with keys that match the notes. Maybe that is why I see music and some odd things in colors. Smells have colors. Words have colors. My fingers on the piano keyboard make cartoons in my head. Okay, I never said I was totally sane.

Okay. Not Beethoven but cute, right?
Great for color-coded toy piano, not the best key for beginning recorder.

So sorry to have let my stream erode to elemental music but that is where my crazy ADD floats off to. I have overloaded on the code words when there were so many out there like these:

  • biodegradable.
  • photodetector.
  • electrodermal.
  • octodecillion.
  • moderatorship.
  • modernization.
  • modernisation.
  • photocathodes.

Just think of where I could have gone with photocathodes, whatever those are.

Zoom and YouTube Day

Do any of you have a Wattpad account? I have had my first book, Haven, up for critique there. It can also be found here on this site. That is only the first four chapters. The whole novel is on Wattpad. I would love to get constructive feedback.

Anyway, the reason for this post isn’t to plug said novel but to tell about my day. You see, Wattpad and NaNoWriMo had an editing tutorial. It was called Edit Smart, Not Perfect: How to Polish Your Best Work Yet. I don’t know if this link will work, but I got to watch the Zoom here.

It was quite informative, and I hope they will put it on YouTube, so it is more accessible for all. If any of you find it at another site, let me know, and I’ll fix what I put here.

Anyway, that is how I started my morning. About the time that was over, I got to Zoom with my friends for our usual Friday meeting.

After a fun long chat, I decided to go watch the DuoCon. If you have Duolingo, you might be interested in watching this:

So I am even more motivated to edit my novels and keep going on my multiple languages. I have so many things I am into right now that I am trying to figure how to fit everything in a day or week. Life is exciting and quite the adventure!

Fandango is the host of Fandango Provocative Question

FPQ

Welcome once again to Fandango’s Provocative Question.

I recently read some interesting statistics regarding how Americans perceive climate change. In a poll by The Economist/YouGov, 72% of Democrats believe governments can take actions to slow climate change, compared with only 24% of Republicans.

More than 80% of Democrats, half of independents, and less than a third of Republicans believe that human activity is warming the planet. Two-thirds of Republicans say massive wildfires, prolonged droughts, and severe hurricanes are events that “just happen from time to time.”

So with this in mind, my provocative question this week is this…

Do you believe that human activity is a significant contributor to climate change or do you concur with those who believe that changes to the climate naturally occur from time to time?

➰➰➰

To my mind, this is no brainer!

Humans are increasingly influencing…

Share Your World is Melanie’s Prompt

When you just need to forget the world for a few hours, what helps you get away from it all?

This is hard for me to understand. I’m a part of this world. All the news and confusion of the political and weather and disease is still there. But reading, writing, creating in any way keeps me going and not drowning in the muck. Knitting, recorder, piano, singing, drawing. So much keeps me busy that I don’t notice a lot of the crazy, or it doesn’t get inside any more.

If you woke up tomorrow with a unicorn horn extending from the top of your head, what would be the biggest advantage and disadvantage of your new appendage?

I would hope that it is a magical unicorn horn with healing abilities and will shoot out rainbows if needed.

What is the creepiest thing you’ve ever seen someone do, that you’d be willing to talk about, of course?

People do some bizarre things all the time. Halloween? Christmas madness comes close. I have never been able to go to haunted houses due to the fear that the crazies aren’t just dressed up in weird costumes, but those weapons may be for real. People spending every dime on gifts and decorations makes no sense. Maybe because I have never had excess money.

What’s the silliest or pettiest thing that tends to really upset you?

High heel shoes, uncomfortable clothing, too much make-up. I don’t understand why people can’t handle just being themselves.

GRATITUDE SECTION (Always Optional)

How comfortable are you with meeting others who are very different from yourself? (no judgment implied.  Different in any way you’d like to think about – different cultures, different races, different mind set (opinions)?

I used to like meeting lots of different kinds of people. Developing social anxiety meant that most of the time if it isn’t people I already know, I’m afraid. Once I get to know a person, I feel they are friends. I have friends that are other political points of view, religions, colors. Maybe our new world makes getting out there meeting others clashes with my inner mental wimp. I want to get to know people here on the blogosphere. The thing is, I can usually find something we have in common. That no matter what kind of person they have, things I can learn, and I have things they can learn from me. And love can lead the way over my fear.

Making Monday

Scrappy socks are nearly finished. Most of the pair are made of the Mani-Pedi crew color yarn. The toes and heels are scraps from the previous pair I made. I’m loving how they are working up.

We lived through the triple digit hot Sunday. Today was sort of hot but not nearly as bad. Tomorrow is supposed to be 72. I might wear jeans and T-shirt instead of shorts and tank-top what a relief! I might take a nice walk as air quality is also supposed to be good for a change.

Girl Love Happens - Season OneGirl Love Happens – Season One by T.B. Markinson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

T.B. Markinson writes believable characters. In this book, the fiction felt realistic.

The blurb says it all:
‘Two college roommates are about to discover how awkward and sexy coming out can be.

Colorado, 1992. Tegan entered her freshman year of college with an open mind. As she tries to cope with a long-distance relationship, Tegan realizes it may not be the miles pulling her apart from her boyfriend. It may be her confusing feelings for her new roommate, Gemma. But when an innocent back rub turns into her first girl-on-girl make-out session, she isn’t sure if she’s ready for the world to know she’s attracted to women.

Gemma knows who she is, but she doesn’t expect Tegan to shout from the rooftops about their new relationship status. With the prying eyes of friends and jealous rivals, however, secrets may not stay hidden for long.

If you like tumultuous love stories, simmering chemistry, and colorful casts of characters, then you’ll love this first installment of T.B. Markinson’s smart, sexy series about coming-of-age as a lesbian in the 1990s.’

The book delivered a story I can’t wait to continue in book 2.

Per Linda:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “luck.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Luck is what you make, right? The fires in the west and the floods in the east and the occasional tornado, not the kind of thing one can make for oneself, right? Those who live and those who die from these incidents are a flip of the coin or brought it on themselves?

Okay, the thought of what we all might have contributed to the laws and the global warming that might have contributed to the catastrophes, does occur. Yet the individual who lives an dies don’t seem to pull that all to themselves. Sure a person can make sure their home is protected as best they can to withstand the throws of nature. But who is to blame for the victim’s bad luck?

There are those who wear special hats or ribbons when they gamble or race. Is it their luck if they win? Is it bad luck if they didn’t wear the lucky pin and they lost?

Yes, I’m addressing this. If we catch COVID19 or Delta and we’ve done everything to prevent it, is it our bad luck? This has to do with neighbors and friends and family, too. Just as a person can pass by your house and recklessly toss a cigarette out the car window and catch your house on fire. Even though you have fireproofed your place it burns down. Luck? Blame? Maybe the worst is the anger that blame brings. The house is still on fire. The possible disease is attacking. Maybe it’s a waste of time and energy to call out the careless? They are probably rich and can get out of it anyway. Sure we hope there will be a way to recover physically and financially. And we have done everything in our power to stay safe and healthy. We’ve saved our pennies when we could. So it’s just bad luck?

I’m falling down a rabbit hole here. I’m not sure there is a wise person, guru, rabbit’s foot that can save this blog today.

Meanwhile, our day was hot, 96 with smoke and clouds making it sticky and awful. We’ve kept the fans going and kept hydrated. Tomorrow will be 100. If we are lucky we will get through as the next week shows 80s. Our pets lay around the floor and we check on them. We take siestas during the heat of the day and that helps a little. But I get grouchy after a hot nap.

All the while I am hearing this earworm.

Maybe I can get it out of my head.

The Walking Dead, Vol. 16: A Larger WorldThe Walking Dead, Vol. 16: A Larger World by Robert Kirkman

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I just finished watching the series, getting ready for season 11 and wasn’t prepared to let the TWD characters go. So I picked up the next in the comic series that I hadn’t read yet. I can’t believe how far behind I am in the reading.

The Kindle version is my favorite, so I can open up each frame, see details, and read the dialogue. Maybe after cataract surgery, I will be able to read books and comic books. Meanwhile, I’m glad this technology is out there for folks like me. And it doesn’t take up room in my already stuffed bookshelves.

This particular volume was about discovering Hilltop and meeting the character Jesus. I know this is the calm before the storm. But it was nice to have the reprieve, even if a little boring. Still, it was great to connect with the TWD family, even if it is different from the show’s characters.
