To Catch Her Death (Grim Reality, #1)To Catch Her Death by Boone Brux

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

That was fun! If you like dark humor like the show, ‘Dead Like Me’, this may be up your alley. It is a quick read but not so quick that you feel cheated. I loved the main character, Lisa Carron, widow, mother of teens, and now, whether she wants it or not, Grim Reaper. Be aware, this is funny. I laughed out loud a couple times even though it was time to be quiet and get ready to sleep.

This book made me want to read book two, but I just can’t afford it yet. (Trying to save money for the move coming up.) But when I can I look forward to reading more about this wonderful reaper of death and her family.

By the way, I read this using the British female text-to-speech on 2x speed. Maybe that means nothing to you, but to me the TTS is very important to my reading experience and I think it plays well this story.

Rippler (Ripple, #1)Rippler by Cidney Swanson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is my second read of this book. It was fun to go back and re-experience Sam and the gang and see the rippler life reborn. The reason for the reread was to listen to the new Audible version. I did enjoy the narration of Sarah Mollo-Christensen. Now as good as she was, Ms. Mollo-Christensen, I found her voice too low in comparison with my inner voice. Only the fake male voices were right. So my guess is that if this was your first time reading this book the narrator’s voices will be the correct ones. By the way, the hardest voices for me to hear were Sam’s friend, Gwyn Li and her mother. They just were too low and too — boring. They should sound a lot more energetic. But even so, I am giving this audio version five stars. That is because I am assuming a first time listener wouldn’t have so many preconceived ideas.

Thank you, Cidney Swanson for letting me enjoy this version at a discount. I love your work!

Lesbian Crushes and Bulimia: A Diary on How I Acquired my Eating DisorderLesbian Crushes and Bulimia: A Diary on How I Acquired my Eating Disorder by Natasha Holme

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I didn’t want to give this book five stars. Most of that is fear. I am afraid that young people might try to emulate this author’s eating disorder. The rest of this diary was an interesting read. I envy the younger generation and they way they are freer to try out their wings, sexual or otherwise. It is interesting watching how this student learns who she is and who she is more comfortable loving. I love how she is open with her partners to be about how it is more of an experiment to her than an emotional attachment. I like that she chooses to be protected in her quest to find herself. But when she gets hung up in her self-image and eating or not to be the size she thinks she ought to be, whoa, what a train-wreck.

So my five stars comes with a warning: please stay healthy and don’t get hung up in how you should look to others. Stay strong, eat healthily. Accept yourself.

The Discreet Lesbian: (Episode 1 in the Mandy Series)The Discreet Lesbian: by Mackenzie Stone

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I hate short stories! There is never enough time to get to know the characters and get involved in the story. What do I hate more than short stories? Episodes! To me, this is a way to wring more money out of an already poorer set of customers. And though many young women need this kind of book during their time of coming to terms with themselves, these seem to be the books that wring the most out of the purse. Very sad.

The three stars I gave this book are for the ways I felt I could relate to the main character of the book. The author described the life and times and development of Mandy in ways that would help those who are struggling to come out. And though this book is free the rest are $2.99 each. There just isn’t enough meat/story here to put out more money. Sorry. If this had been longer, I might not mind. I might have given five stars. But with it so short… meh.

RedactionRedaction by Linda Andrews

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow! What a movie! No. It wasn’t a movie. It really was the Kindle version of a book that has text-to-speech. But it was easily as good as any other disaster movie on SyFy. It was written from several people’s points of view. We even get inside the evil, bad guy’s head. Yuck! Yuck! But it made it a better read, I think, by being able to see what these people are going through in their end days. post a horrid disease in which most of the population has died. These are the leftovers. But their survival looks questionable.

I loved most of the characters. I loved how these people inhabited their world and dealt with the cards dealt them. I think that is what makes a good disaster book or movie. Show us how we can be good in the face of the bad. Show us how to turn our thoughts around to make sure we are caring people in crises. What else matters in the end but how you treat your fellow beings on the planet?

I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. By the way, with the Fire, I have my text-to-speech set to British female. That makes everything sound like Julie Andrews is reading to me. It makes nearly every book better!

Homesteading Handbook vol. 2: Growing an Organic Vegetable Garden (Homesteading Handbooks)Homesteading Handbook vol. 2: Growing an Organic Vegetable Garden by Michelle Grande

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the second book by Michelle Grande that I picked up for free and am very grateful to have it. As I have said before I will be moving onto a property that will have enough land for a garden soon so I am gathering information while I can. Sure, I won’t be able to work on the garden until next Spring, still I think it wise to read as much as I can so I can be ready to start said garden. This book and the previous volume will be on my ‘reference shelf’ to gather whatever information I might need. The book is thorough addressing most vegetables/herbs a person might want to grow and each of the needs. It also addresses pests and ways to keep the garden organic. In fact, the second half of this book is individualized per veggie. That will make referring back easier when it is time. I didn’t read this last part as it is detailed with information I don’t need right now. But I will read it in the future.

I was lucky enough to pick this one up for free. It is still free on Kindle Unlimited but is well worth the $2.99. I look forward to putting these books to the test next year.

Magnesium: What Your Doctor Needs You To Know: Including: How to Fight Diabetes, Have a Healthy Heart, and Get Strong Bones!Magnesium: What Your Doctor Needs You To Know: Including: How to Fight Diabetes, Have a Healthy Heart, and Get Strong Bones! by Nolan Edwards

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book is very informative. And a great introductory book about the benefits of magnesium in our diets or supplementals.

BUT it was repetitive. VERY repetitive. Maybe because I have read all of this before elsewhere? I did come away with more of a curiosity to try to make sure I get more of this mineral either in my diet or on my body (soaking in Epson Salt or using the oil) to see if it will help with my fibromyalgia.

If you are curious this book is only $.99 for Kindle or free with Kindle Unlimited. Well worth it to see if it is something you might need to add to your heal regiment.

Time and Time AgainTime and Time Again by Q. Kelly

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well, this was fun. And different. But it is what I expect from Q. Kelly. I love the way she writes. I love her characters and her world building. Her plots are always just a little surprising and fun.

Don’t get me wrong, This story deals with some depressing issues, death and loss. But ghosts are involved and love. Lots of love. And growing of characters.

This story seems to be a short one as it stops midstory. But turn the page and a whole other twist arises. Nope. Not telling. Spoilers!

What pulls you in at the beginning of the story is the children who are now ghosts. Their world is just the vacation cabin and a small amount of land surrounding it. It is from their point of view. Gradually we get to know the author who is stuck at that cabin with writer’s block. Can you see the fun you are about to take by joining them her their world? You will be inhabiting many POVs by the end, but they all help the story to grow.

Though this book includes some lesbian love, it is mild for the straights that might find that sort of thing offputting. There is just so much love of all kinds in here that it all equals out. And it makes you think… what if????? I like those kinds of stories. But that is a hallmark style for Ms. Kelly. I love how she cooks a story to perfection. I was going to just give this four stars. But I think I will give five. I know I will think back to this story Time and Time Again, again. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I may even need to reread it to delve into this vacation space again.

The Witch WithinThe Witch Within by Iva Kenaz

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Stockholm Syndrome. Just looked it up and didn’t want to forget it. I’ll get back to it later.

I want to thank A.S. Johnson for her many book recommendations. She rarely leads me wrong. I certainly loved Ms. Iva Kenaz’s other book My Melancholy Diary, also one of Ms. Johnson’s recommendations. So it didn’t surprise me that I loved this book, too, even though these two books had very little in common.

Both books were strong quick reads. Both books had strong young women as their main characters. And though I didn’t catch it (I actually read it in another review) both books are centered in Prague, the Czech Republic where the author is from. I will have to re-read this book to see where Talitha, (MC, The Witch Within) resides.

Now I have to pull away from the review a bit to let you all know what happened as I attempted to read this book. My Text-to-Speech didn’t track with the book. It would read ahead a few pages, but the pages didn’t turn so I was stuck reading the one page while TTS read future pages. I couldn’t manually flip the page or the TTS would turn off. That made the read less exciting than I believe it could have been. I will have to call Amazon to see if I can do anything about that. TTS was the whole reason I bought this Fire. Anyway, I didn’t call them while reading the book because I was still engrossed in Talitha’s life and didn’t want the real world to interrupt the read. Hopefully, this TTS didn’t mess up my experience of the book. I do plan to re-read it so I may raise the rating then. As it was, with the TTS problem, I had to read some pages two or three times each just so I didn’t miss anything. It only ruined the mood a little.

I would love my Wiccan friends to read this and let me know how accurate the chants and alphabet bits were. Seemed real enough for fiction. And due to reading another review I know the Cursed Areas do exist. So much of the story played out nicely. I was caught up in Talitha’s plight and then getting kidnapped. And though I hate stories that include the hatred directed to witches, or the ‘lesbian?’ people in the book it was during that historic time. Still I felt the main character could have been more forgiving of the skyclad dancers and their passions.

My biggest problem was how Talitha fell in love with her captor. Yes, he was the nicer of the guys but all I could think was this was a historic case of Stockholm Syndrome. And though it didn’t leave us on a real cliffhanger, much is left for a future book, I’m sure. Oh, and I was often struck at how adult Talitha was even though she was merely 14 or 15. But maybe back then people matured faster. So I didn’t let it stop the story. So with so many elements messed up for me in this read, I think I want to rate this a 4.5 rather than a full 5 stars. But I will read it again to make sure.
