Yay, Friday!

On Tuesday my husband had another successful cataract surgery. He got home safely. After that it was downhill for the week.

Teddy started getting sick. He is getting better on the antibiotics.

What I forgot to mention, our poor white mama hen and one of the chicks got taken by hawks.

Only one survives. At least the five other hens and the rooster are letting the chick stay with them. And at least tonight it won’t be freezing.

What a rollercoaster week!

This Guy

Teddy

Has had us scared for the last couple days. Falling instead of jumping off beds. Walking around like a drunk. Last night I felt him and he was cold and not moving. He’s about thirteen, so too young to leave this world.

My touching him was irritating. He left my bed for another.

We took him to the vet today. We think it is an inner ear infection. She started him with an antibiotic shot with more drops for us to continue twice a day for the duration. He’s back to eating and drinking.

He loves traveling, even when he’s sick. He got out of the carrier to watch the world go by. Nearly three hours of his favorite pastime. Even if he was the only drunk in the truck. ๐Ÿ˜‰

One-liner Wednesday

Though today is smokey, you can see it is Autumn. Fires and bugs take heed: Winter is coming!

I can’t remember how it was I picked up this book and its sequels. Sorry. Even so, this is a fun apocalyptic read about a young woman trying to survive in a dystopian world with pandemics popping up here and there.

Maybe it is a bit more adventure than a person should read just before sleep. But it didn’t affect me too much.

This was a different take on the post-apocalypse world. A young woman finding her way in a world with few rules that all follow. Micka is a well-developed character with a few quirks of her own. She has lexical-gustatory synesthesia. That on top of learning about menstruation and sexual preference while trying to survive makes her a very interesting person to get to know. Just as she is getting to know herself.

Here is Wikipedia’s definition:
Lexical-gustatory synesthesia is a rare form of synesthesia in which spoken and written โ€ฆ Tip of tongue studies have shown that a word’s lemma may be responsible for eliciting a taste sensation, not its phonologic sound or spelling. Further โ€ฆ development and lead to the over-representation of the flavors of childhood foods.

I have known a couple of people who have variations of this. I know I have a mild case and it often helps me remember or recognize certain words or names that might slip my mind otherwise.

This book was a quick read. Now I have committed the second book because one isn’t enough. Give it a try. You might like it, too.

Monday

Fibro fog has found me again. So tired and achy. I’m sure I’ll be fine. But I couldn’t even find the energy to attend the writers group on zoom. Is it the change of seasons affecting me? We do have to drip faucets tonight as it reaches 32 tonight. Sleep well, world. See you tomorrow.

Sunny Sunday

We have two newish chicks. The white hen is the mom. One baby is drinking water, the other is upper left. They are dark brown like their daddy.

Fall is happening. Yellow trees, yellow driveway.

I’ll take another picture tomorrow as this was two days ago. There are lots more on the driveway today, and the tree is more naked.

By the way, working from my phone is easier now than laptop. Go figure!

Happy Sunday!

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is โ€œnew/old.โ€ Use either or both of the words โ€œnew and oldโ€ any way youโ€™d like. Bonus points for starting and ending with either one. Have fun!

I do not like the new blocking system. I don’t know how to add pictures or anything else. Bring back the old system.

So Bright the Stars (Shadow of Mars Book 2)So Bright the Stars by Cidney Swanson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Yay! Another well-done sci-fi/Mars book! I would have loved to read this as a teen but love just as much as a septuagenarian. This is the second book in this series. The main character is now on Mars and is trying to fit in with the society that is already there.

Cidney Swanson has researched well to keep the story believable. Without making the story drab. She digs deep into her characters to bring them to life. As I am reading/listening to text-to-speech I find Ms. Swanson has me questioning ‘would I have done that? thought that?’ and the answers are sometimes obvious to the reader but not so much the main character, Penney. Other times the reader is in as much dark as Penney is.

I can’t wait for book three! Meanwhile, I hope you all get a chance to read the first series of Mars, Saving Mars which is more for the young adult, and then this series for adults as the character is an adult. But I see nothing that should keep a younger person from reading anything by Cidney. Enjoy!

One-liner Wednesday

Watching Deep Space Nine. I hear, ‘…in linear life, one day builds on another…’ I wonder what Star Trek thought of 2020.

One-liner Wednesday seems easy unless you can’t find a good one-liner. If you favor novels it is very difficult. But fun!
