RE-re-read Review

Written in My Own Heart's Blood (Outlander, #8)Written in My Own Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So a few days ago, I finished the book again. I am still in awe and in love with the whole Outlander series. I love the adventure of seeing history through the eyes of my imaginary literary friends. I love the ways Brianna and Roger attempt to solve a kidnapping of their child. A scary enough event without all of history to explore. I love the way Jamie and Claire were able to stay in touch with their daughter and her family over time. This story only seems to pull me more and more. I’ve already started re-reading 3 of the next book. Even now, I have reruns of the first season playing while writing this and my NaNoWriMo. I love the music, and I don’t have to be involved while it is on. If there were a magic wand, I would wave it and wish I could write like Diana Gabaldon and narrate like Davina Porter.
~~~
Yes, I reread it. And I still say the same things about it being my favorite Outlander so far. Do you want to know why? Okay, beyond Diana Gabaldon’s writing and research and Davina Porter’s voice acting, this character and scenes list goes beyond the first review I wrote below.
Characters: Jamie Fraser, Brianna Randall, Roger MacKenzie, Jeremiah MacKenzie, Fergus Fraser, Marsali Fraser, Germain Fraser, Ian Murray, Lord John Grey, Benedict Arnold, Claire Randall Fraser, Jonathan Randall, Dougal MacKenzie, Geillis Duncan, Jenny Murray, Young Ian Murray, William Ransom, Rachel Hunter, Denzell Hunter, William Buccleigh MacKenzie, Amanda MacKenzie, Harold, Duke of Pardloe, Henri-Christian Fraser, Brian Fraser, Jane Pocock, Frances Pocock, Dorothea Grey, Jerry MacKenzie, George Washington.
Settings: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1778 (United States)
Lallybroch, Scotland, 1980 (United Kingdom)
I thought that book 7, Echo In The Bone, was my favorite of the Outlander books. Nope. Written in My Own Heart’s Blood wins. It was fantastic!
Regardless of the time the characters land in, they all grow and help us learn the rules of Gabaldon’s Time Travel.
What can I tell you that won’t spoil it for you?
As usual, there is a lot of research evident in the reading, and as one supposes, there are instances of poetic license, which Diana Gabaldon admits she has it framed on her wall.
The most exciting part of the book is when Breanna talks about Doctor Who in a chapter called “Thank You For The Fish.” (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy). Now I really wish I had a TARDIS so that I could play in all three universes.
And I wish I could move on to book 9, but my Audible credits don’t come until the middle of the month. A quick note about why I read by Audible most often now: actual reading is impossible for my eyes. It seems to be a tracking issue. So I use Kindle Text-to-Speech a lot. Though TTS works well for most books, I want to hear words pronounced correctly when other languages are involved. Davina Porter is able to range the language barriers and character ages and sexes with apparent ease. I love listening to her.
If you get the chance, the books are as good, if not better than the shows, and the Audible versions are the best of all the worlds. Enjoy!
By the way, since the first reading and the need for Audible, I have had cataract surgery and hope that soon I can read paper books. But for books like this with many foreign languages I don’t know how to pronounce, I’ll stick with Audible.
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “full/empty.” Use one, use ’em both, use ’em any way you’d like. Bonus points for including both in your post. Have fun!
There was a time when our home was full of love with our set of black-and-white dog, Kali, black cat, Rosey, and orange tabby, Teddy. They grew old and passed, leaving our home so empty for so long!
Through some wonderful magic in our lives, we have a full house of love again. Black-and-white dog Milo (formerly ‘Crunchy’), black cat, Shiloh, and our orange tabby, Sammie. It is the oddest thing, even now, that the combination of pets came just that way. We still mess up names and genders. Every parent knows how easy it is to call the wrong name of the naughty kid or when in an emergency moment hits. Most of the time, the kids don’t look the same. Autocorrecting the brain can save it. But if your kids all look alike (Italian, dark hair and eyes), it’s even harder. So I should be used to it. But this team of pets is uncanny!
I don’t want to go searching for the old team pictures (I need to write 2,000 words today–this distraction I can avoid), but here’s the latest of the ‘ILO’ team
They loves each other! Milo and Shiloh groom each other and play often. They share their bed with me.
And here’s Sammie from the other day. I like the picture so much that I need to see them again.
He is getting used to the ‘Ilos” and now plays with them. They have been on my husband’s bed together–he has treats nearby.
But this was just this morning. With temps being in the teens, I love the BTU of pets.
Isn’t that the cutest face?
On the other hand, on November 1st, my yWriter app was empty. On November 30th, it should be full. I should be at 36,674 words. I only have 33,172. TrackBear says I should write 1,893 a day to reach the 50k by the end of November. But that is a lot. 1,667 is a lot. If I can push it today and for a few days, I might bring this project to something doable. Wish me luck! I need to bring this story to its full and proper ending. Let’s hope the brain isn’t empty!
Foggy Friday
The start of the day it was 12 degrees. The freezing fog gave us a snowy effect.
It was ten in the morning when I thought to take this. So much had already melted.
My experimental socks are the only ones that got any attention
The balloon is nearly done. Yay!
But NaNoWriMo is taking all my energy and time and still I’m behind.
Time to get back to work.
I mentioned yesterday how NaNoWriMo seems the time for math and charts. Everyone knows to reach 50,000 words in 30 days, you write 1,667 words a day. But get ahead or behind, one must ‘math’ it out.
I use tons of junk mail envelopes and other scrap paper figuring out how to get to goals hourly, daily, weekly. When the brain needs to make sure it’s right, pull out the calculator. As if ‘adds’, ‘subtracts’, ‘timesies’, ‘dividing’, and ratios, and “Hey, look a prime!” aren’t enough. Then I run over to TrackBear and many times a day update my latest word count to find out if I ‘bear down’ can I reach my goal? And they offer a cool chart to prove it.
This year (and this is subject to change at any minute) cooking and housework call my attention that I normally seem to ignore.
But naps and dream times bring my characters alive or bring questions.
This morning I woke to the title of this post. Folie à Plusieurs, the Musical.
How? I asked  the muses, mermaids can’t sing or dance except in cartoons. ADHD mind now sings, “Look at this stuff….” And tightening the lasso on the muse I bring back the line of questions.
Are there animals with gills and lungs? Do any of those animals make noise? Who can do the tap dance?
This story started with males I was sure were going to be the antagonists. Nope, not so much. The next three a mermaid, a selkie, a melusine, the two tail finned mermaid ala Starbucks.
The problem with the mermaid, um, hard to run to safety on land if even a tear of moisture creates said tail fin.
Selkies are rather pretty, though noisy, seals. Maybe a pad around on stage but singing voice needs help.
The melusine can move around due to the two tail fins and wings. But she’s too powerful for stage.
Then comes the never ending research. I hope you can see the Tubes I found. They aren’t showing up on this writing page. If not maybe research the fishy questions above. Eye opening! The little fish can supply the tap dancing sounds. The other voices plus a whale or two may supply tunes. Musical? Maybe?😂🤣🥴 (And yes, I count these words!)
One-Liner Wednesday
A part of Linda’s One-Liner Wednesday prompt
I do more chart reading and math in November than any other time of the year. (Yes, I met my goal for today. Time to sleep!)
Word Count
I only have 27,016. I still need 300 before I can go to bed. Yikes! See ya’ll later.
My Grape Baby (The Grape Series, #9)My Grape Baby by Laura Bradbury
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I’m sad that this is the end of the series, as far as I know. It has been fun to watch Laura in her college years, meeting and marrying Franck. I loved meeting her Canadian family and Franck’s French family. There is a bit of a feeling of traveling and living somewhere other than here.
In previous books, we met Laura and Franck’s first two babies. We enjoyed watching them flip a couple of homes and a wine cellar. And we read about food and wine, a lot of wine. The real estate and food I can do without, but in this book, it gets personal. And may I, without giving spoilers, warn you to have Kleenex nearby.
I wish Laura and her family all the best. Enjoy these books if you get the chance.
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “pop.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!
Popping around to play NaNo Avoidance. It’s a game I play every year. The only rule is to do anything but write on the current project. I try to baby that child, giving in here and there but imposing tiny rules of my own. Just 333 words in an hour several times a day still brings that daily tally
But I’m not the only one popping around.
Sammy played Pop Goes the Kitty to distract me:
He’s way too big for the kitty tree now but he manages to play in it with Shiloh sleeping on the top nest.
Gives me an idea for my next avoidance trick.
By next week this balloon will be finished. I think I’m tired of balloons.
Yay!
Sondheim is rolling around in his grave as I work on this and quite a few other of his songs. (That intro kills my eyes and hands!) By the way, I finally got brave enough to get back into Phantom songs. That has inspired much longer playing sessions. I started out last October 1, 2024 doing minutes or just an easy tune. This week I managed two sessions of over an hour each. And I was excited by how much fun I had!
On the other hand, I’m maybe 2k behind. At least TrackBear helps me adjust my daily goal making the 50k within reach — I hope.
No, my machines are not so fancy-dancy. Still, my time on both the stationary bike and treadmill increases. I hope it increases.
For the knitting, I’ll just use last week’s pic as I’ve done very little knitting.
