Paper or plastic – print and electronic books compared [infographic].

Kindle with text-to-speech is the only way for my old eyes. I was able to read 225 books last year because of this system. Before Kindle my reading habits had faded to the background of my life. I missed my dear friend. Books had been my food for so long. Now I am back to devouring four or five at a time!

Where the Story Comes In

You can begin your first draft like this:

Joseph stood on her front porch but didnโ€™t knock. The wind as it was coming from the east, made his eyes squint.

She opened the door. Saw him there, and she nodded and smiled.

ย In one way, itโ€™s a nice way to start. You arenโ€™t over using state-of-being verbs, like was or were, or the helpers words like as and had been, too much.

The verbs here are stood, knock, was, coming, made, squint, opened, saw, nodded, and smiled. But it is a lot of stage direction for the wind, Joseph and someone named she.

ย ON second glance, you have to admit, these lines are mostly story facts. The โ€˜Where folks areโ€™, the โ€˜What they did, movement wiseโ€™. Thereโ€™s not a lot of storytelling here yet.

ย 

We arenโ€™t given many suggestions about anyoneโ€™s emotions, or motivations, thereโ€™sโ€ฆ

Good News!

After three days of flaring I had my appointment with the GP. I’ve lost weight and no longer have to take Metformin. And now she wants to send me to a pain specialist. It is about time! My gluten-free/vegan diet with a little coconut oil is working. Just not on the pain. But–no more Metformin!!!!

Adultrens

There has been a problem within our family. Not a big one. One I do remember from when I was the grown up daughter with little ones of my own. That shout that says, “I am a grown woman! Why are you still treating me like I am a child?”

Now my daughter and sons have spoken the same thing to me, They were more polite about it and I got the message. I explained that they are still the precious people they were for me when they were small. But I have always respected their minds and points of view. I always knew they were smarter than me. And their advice is stellar. But there isn’t a word that says that. Offspring, children, kids=all wrong.

So here is my word and I say it with love and pride: adultrens.

If you are newly adult through your 40s what are you called? What would you like to be called?

If you are parents of adult offspring, how do you solve this problem?
