And what do pictures of horses, deer, and scenery of rolling sagebrush with the occasional purple flowers have to do with a dentist? Well, let me share a few pictures and then get back to the story. By the way, I didn’t capture pics but these Pixabay dot coms come close.
Though the trip was long with little to look at except the sagebrush there were the occasional fun sights. And once there, and somehow we made it on time, I loved meeting the office staff and the dentist herself. She was science and recited all the sciencey things about my teeth and what needed to be done for my best health. They had a wrap-around x-ray that was so interesting to see all parts of the skull and even down into the neck. Sinus cavities and leftover wisdom tooth parts, and so much more. Doctor Michelle Crabtree was so wonderful!
What is interesting is that though Burns is about as close to us as Bend Oregon, it seemed a longer trip. Maybe because the scenery didn’t change as drastic as as the Bend trip. The Burns trip made me think about how time works faster for us these days. I thought how the trip might have been for those in the covered wagons. They didn’t measure it in minutes like we do. They measured in days. When I forgot for a few minutes that I had an appointment within the hours I could let the scenery evolve naturally. It was so beautiful.
Hooked on Classics got us by as vocal music was hard to hear with the windows down. Blast from the past 1982ish?

Happy birthday to me, COVID19 style.
So that was my one-liner for One-liner Wednesday but wait, there’s more:
I wanted to see the trees and nature for my day. My husband and Kali took me up to the campsite. It is only 14 miles from our home. Unfortunately, it is a rough dirt road. But well worth the drive!
Here I am giving a guided tour of the favorite campground for our family. Though it is only 14 miles away, as I mentioned before, it takes a while to drive it.
Kali isn’t a fan of the drive. When I let her out for a while to walk, I think she would have rather walked the whole way. Nope. I am not in that kind of shape.
After we got too cold to stand there, we climbed into the truck to come home. It was equally as long coming home (go figure!), but at the end of the dirt road, we saw a herd of deer just before getting on the highway. I took a couple pictures from the passenger seat across from Chris and his barely opened window, but maybe you can join me in enjoying the thrill of seeing these sweeties.
Bittersweet by Susan Wittig Albert

My librarian suggested this book knowing I wanted to try a ‘real’ book written by and starring a strong female. Now that I am finished with it I can say I did enjoy much of it. (I had to renew it–six weeks!)
“Oh, but here comes her complaints…” I hear some of you saying. And, yes, I do have some negatives.
The very beginning. I think it is highly unnecessary. When you read the Prologue you’re given the answer to the whole mystery. Many call this a cozy mystery. What, I ask you, is cozy about murder? Not just one but TWO? What is cozy about people who think more about money than the environment that we all have to live in humans, fauna, and flora alike?
At least the author uses this as an educational moment. That is what brought it up to four stars. Otherwise, I would have said I was rather bored. Though the excitement of the mystery gets wrapped up, the parts of the book I cared about, the main character’s mother’s husband’s health. It is the cliffhanger of that issue that brings this rating down to a three again. I didn’t like this story where the men of this book were being talked about. If women can grow, let’s show that men can grow, too. Many have been raised with sisters or single moms so they know the issues and don’t need to be cavemen.
I loved learning about the herbs and plants.
I never knew about the shooting-fish-in-the-barrel type hunting and moving the game to places they shouldn’t inhabit and the problems that brings. I will have to look into our area and see if that is here. I don’t have a problem with hunters. I hope we never get desperate enough to look to that as a food source, but if we do I guess I will have to accept it. Plenty of people around here do that for their food source. There are laws to keep it safe and less draining on the environment while filling the freezers with protein for cold winters. I’m a vegetarian because I don’t like the texture of meat, not a preachy one telling others what they should or shouldn’t eat. Anyway, the things I learned here made the rating roundup.
I don’t like to cook. Most of the foods in the recipes here did not appeal to me but I take no points away from the book for these. There are people who will love that aspect. I do appreciate that most of the recipes are at the back of the book where they don’t interrupt the story flow.
One more thing, I did get my eyes checked and will be getting new glasses soon. Meanwhile, I couldn’t read the hardback for very long at a time. Luckily, the Kindle version was available on our e-library to borrow. Once into that version, I was able to immerse in the story and rest my eyes as needed.

Season of Lies by Monica Shaughnessy

I have had this book for a few years. It is embarrassing to know I have had it that long. Still books don’t spoil while sitting on the shelf waiting for eyes to read them.
Okay, now about the book itself. Though it seems to be a fantasy, girl who has hidden talent, it is a contemporary young adult book. The main character can communicate with animals … or has a mental illness. Possibly killed her brother. Yikes!
As you get to know her, Robin, the main character, grows on you. She is sweet, sensitive, and strong. As you watch her growth you can hardly wait until she come into her own life. I loved all of this and it kept me reading.
What I didn’t like was the accents. This might come across okay to the silent reader. But for those of us that use text-to-speech it is not only annoying but confusing. Even when I haven’t needed to ‘listen’ to my books, this kind of thing is distracting from the main story. I read it on my Moon Reader Pro which sounded foolish at times as it tried to figure out how to pronounce those contracted words. Because of that, I had to pay attention to the written words as I went. Not a great one to listen to on the road or while busy doing other things.
Anyway, I don’t want to discourage anyone who might want to read the book. You might have a better time with it than I did. And I am curious to read other works by this author.

Where is book two? I want more!
This has been the most satisfying read I’ve had in a long time. Unrequited office romance, abduction, then Clan of the Cavebears. Let go of disbelief. Enjoy the ride. There is action and adventure but also Walden contemplation and zen yoga.
I must admit that I am too ADD to sit still for the meditation bits, but I put on the fast text-to-speech and felt more in touch with the main character.
Dorothy Gravelle, I can hardly wait to read more of your work!
