Ta Da Tuesday

I started my revisit to playing the piano at the beginning of October last year.

At that time two of my friends were in the hospital. In my piano journal I mentioned the deep thoughts and how it might affect my “playing”.  Three days later one of my friends passed away and I worried the other might join her. Outside of praying there was little I could do.

Birds sing. They just do. Creativity has to happen. Just because.

I think I started before October. But the journey back to the keys got serious then. I started keeping the piano journal then.

I remember trying to figure out how to start.

My friend and I were already working on bringing back our creative muses. She said I should make sure to say ‘play’ not ‘practice’. It has worked.

But when I started back I found I couldn’t play songs I memorized or at least conquered back when I was twelve.

It was embarrassing, depressing, in fact, to even think about some of the songs. And I had to have everyone in the house hide away while I played.

At first I would play for five minutes. My anxiety was so high.

I’d play far easier things or sight read what might be easy.

Early on I looked at the Shirley Temple Songbook and felt that there was no chance I’d get the rhythm. Modern rhythms, syncopation. Bane of my existence.

Well, I finally got brave and started hitting the Songbook.

Yeah, see the drawing at the top right of Early Bird? Mrs. Skinner drew that timing illustration for my 12 year old self. I’m getting it. Sort of 63 years later. Ta Da!

Still missing my Michele. But glad Yvensong is better.

When I was a girl, I dreamed of shooting the curl. But alas I never learned to surf.

As a child my mother wanted me to have curly hair. She or my aunt gave me perms. Ugh! I hated it! And it took forever to grow out. It wasn’t so much curly as frizzy.

In sixth grade I had a thing for Shirley Temple. I used those pink sponge rollers, or mom would use rags to curl my hair into those ringlets. I loved Ms. Temples songs, shows, and dances.

From Curly Top

My teen years found me using coke, orange juice, or coffee cans as rollers as Cher straight hair was in. I couldn’t find pics, sorry.

A week after high school graduation I started cosmetology classes at the city college. We didn’t learn to use the hot roller. Or blow dryer. Or French braids. We learned pin curls, and finger waves. And pivot rollers. But I loved working with hair and meeting the nice ladies. Long hair was my favorite. Especially wedding looks. But, ugh, long days standing in one place had me in tears every night.
Yes. That’s my new goal. I’m not even curling those. I’m still on the purple ones that look like elongated hair curlers
A Milo pic. Just because. He curls up next to me at night. But stretches out on the cool floor in the heat of dog days.
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “curl.” Use it as a noun, use it as a verb, use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

I thought I had it made! I saw Golly Gee and Animal Crackers came to mind. Ah, alas, I was wrong, as the lyrics point out below. She says, Gosh, oh Gee. Well. Too bad. Shirley needed the nod. I bet if I did a deep search, we could find when she actually said, Golly Gee!

I think I’ve talked about how I was/am a Shirley Temple fan. In sixth grade, (60 years ago!) I was the leader of my class’s Shirley Temple Fan Club, membership ONE, ME. I would sing the songs for my classmates. Where did I get the courage? Well, the year before, my friends and I did The Wizard of Oz, so…

In sixth grade, I was 12. My mother told me she was Shirley Temple’s actual age. Ms. Temple was already an ambassador. Well, here’s her wiki.

My piano teacher did everything she could to keep me interested in playing the piano, so she found this book for me, yes, I still have it, and it is in the same shape as I am these days.

The only centerfold I’ve ever loved!
See the Lassie sticker? There is a sticker on every song in this book. That meant I could play them near perfection. Ah, but now, it is sadly hard to play. Maybe after cataract surgery? I can only hope!

Lyrics

Animal crackers in my soup
Monkeys and rabbits loop the loop
Gosh, oh gee, but I have fun
Swallowing animals one by one

In every bowl of soup, I see
Lions and Tigers watching me
I make ’em jump right through a hoop
Those animal crackers in my soup

When I get hold of the big bad wolf
I just push him under to drown
Then I bite him in a million bits
And I gobble him right down

When they’re inside me where it’s dark
I walk around like Noahs Ark
I stuff my tummy like a goop
With animal crackers in my soup

Animal crackers in my soup
Do funny things to me
They make me think my neighborhood
Is a big menagerie

For instance, there’s our Janitor
His name is Mr. Klein
And when he Hollers at us kids
He reminds me of a Lion

The Grocer is so big and fat
He has a big mustache
He looks just like a Walrus
Just before he takes a splash

Animal crackers in my soup
Monkeys and rabbits loop the loop
Gosh, oh gee, but I have fun
Swallowing animals one by one

In every bowl of soup, I see
Lions and Tigers watching me
I make ’em jump right through a hoop
Those animal crackers in my soup

When I get hold of the big bad wolf
I just push him under to drown
Then I bite him in a million bits
And I gobble him right down

When they’re inside me where it’s dark
I walk around like Noahs Arc
I stuff my tummy like a goop
With animal crackers in my soup

When they’re inside me where it’s dark
I walk around like Noahs Arc
I stuff my tummy like a goop
With animal crackers in my soup

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “golly gee.” Use “golly gee” or another interjection that displays the same sentiment in your post. Enjoy!,,

Once again, sorry I’m late. Crazy computer problems.

If anyone wants to join in the #ShareYourWorld fun, check out Cee’s Photograph. Her site is wonderful to look at and she has many fun prompts to play along with, whether writing or photography.

Have you ever participated in a distance walking, swimming, running, or biking event? Tell your story.

No. I haven’t done that. I would love to be in good enough shape to do it. On the other hand, I have been known to walk the 8-mile round trip to get my mail. Not very often, and VERY slow.

Name one thing not many people know about you.

I used to be a Shirley Temple fan. I knew all her songs and even tried to dress like her, curl my hair like her. Okay, it was sixth grade. What do you want? At the same time, she became a diplomat. She was a pretty good role model for a young girl.

What is your favorite flower?

There are two. Hyacinths

and Hydrangeas.

The first for the wonderful scent of spring. The second for memories of playing bride with my grandmother’s forbidden bouquets. I can still hear her yelling at me for picking them. That was in my Annie Oakley days.

Things I want to have in my home (paintings, hot tubs, bookcases, big screen tv etc)

Though I like to paint and look at paintings, I have never had much desire to add to my confusion but hanging things on the walls. I have a bunch of pictures I think about doing this with but can’t bring myself to mess us a perfectly good blank space.

I’d love to have a hot tub and a never ending pool. I love being in the water, I love swimming!

One can never have enough shelves or books! Even with my eye issues, I want a lot of books around me and the best way to organize books is shelves.

Nowadays we are all watching our own things. A big screen TV seems like overkill.

I’d like my dishwasher to work, but we are doing fine with all of us keeping that up. I wish I had a built-in vacuum system because we are all bad at doing that chore right now.

Hubby and I need new beds (he needs a reclining type). Our bedroom shower needs to be usable as getting in and out of my life-dream of an antique claw-foot tub is dangerous for us now. 😦

Mostly what we need is more outside storage, a shed to keep our tools in. A chicken coop that can be moved. A dog-run for Kali to be outside more–with a house and protection from predators.

While doing this dreaming, a few more windows need to be doubled for the weather. A working self-sufficient system for water and power, and heating. A swamp cooler might be nice.

A wrap-a-round porch me and a cat-io for my felines. And a lot fewer weeds as I know the three of us will never get this house protected by fire on our own power with hoes and rakes.

I don’t want much. 😉

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

At this point last week is so long ago. I guess that in itself is something to be grateful for. Getting the double recliner into the living room. Life is coming together for us. I still love it here and am so grateful for the wonderful people we have met here.

I’m looking forward to seeing my offspring as they tell me they are coming up soon! Yay! I’m so glad the weather is getting better so I can see family and friends from elsewhere.
