The Witch Sea
The Witch Sea by Sarah Diemer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Talk about overdoing it. I picked up the free version on Smashwords.com. Then forgot I had it and picked up the free one on Amazon! By the way, it is still free on both sites.

This was a short but sweet book. I loved the characters Nor, the sea person, and Meriel, the witch. Though there is a brief romantic tryst between the characters, it didn’t overpower the story. I liked that for the quick read.

I loved how both characters came together to understand they could help each other as they were both prisoners of their respective dwellings. I loved the descriptions of sea and surf.

Short stories are not my thing. They always make me want to know more about the characters, and learn what happens next. I love knowing people in my real life in a deeper way. I want to know what they think, what makes them tick. I am very bad at social small talk. So I think that is why short stories don’t appeal to me. Sorry.

Anyway, if you are so inclined, check out this sweet story.

Review: Silver Tongue

Silver Tongue
Silver Tongue by Evelyn Ink
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Disclaimer: This was a free Smashwords ebook from the author for an honest review, Thank you!

I love the way Evelyn Ink thinks. Her books are always so creative and fun. The worlds she builds are like our own but not. The people have many words similar to ours and some that stray from ours but in logical ways. The best part about her worlds are that they are somewhat steampunkie with aeroships at the like. Her characters are believable, flawed but ever growing.

Silver Tongue’s blurb presents the book as dark and scary. As a middle schooler or junior high student that might be thrilling but as an older student I think this book is just a fun adventure. I can imagine reading this book to my own children so long ago and having a great time with it. But it isn’t simple. Older people can enjoy it, too!

Review: Downgrade

Downgrade
Downgrade by Jacqueline Patricks
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Disclaimer: I was gifted this short story for honest review.

First of all, I was rather disappointed that this was so short with no resolution. With all the CSI type shows out there this would only be the opening scene. Castle would have asked a lot more questions. But I suppose that the paramedic doesn’t get involved in the suicide/murder question. Their job is pronounce the victim or save the victim. So… in that aspect it was a realistic depiction.

Second, I don’t read bloody, smelly stories. Not if I can help it. To the author’s credit, she did an excellent job describing all the sensations one might feel, smell, taste, see, or hear in this kind of scene making it immediately accessible to the reader. That is what we are taught to do as writers. But in this case… TMI? I suppose if you are into these kinds of stories this would be perfect. For me… I think I will go get a breath of fresh air and dive into another sci-fi or fantasy.

Review: Decades

Decades
Decades by Anne de Gandt
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This was too poetic and not enough action for me to stay interested. Sorry. It was only a sample that I got from Smashwords. I don’t think I will be buying the book. For friends who are more inclined to read poetry this might be right up your alley.

Review: Viktoria

Viktoria
Viktoria by Kim Dallmeier
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I don’t know what to think about this book. There were promising threads of plot I wanted to see pursued but instead the story seemed to stay wrapped up in relationship angst. In many ways I found it depressing.

The parts about spirits/ghosts I found interesting. The part about the pagan/spiritualist school was interesting. Now maybe these threads will be caught up into the next book in the series–there is a next book, isn’t there?

Now that I am writing this I see that I do want to see what happens next. Guess I will have to look up book two.

Review: Proximity

Proximity
Proximity by M.A. George
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I picked up this book on an author-giveaway-day on Smashwords. Somehow I forgot that I already had it. Then Kindle had a freebie day and I pick it up there, too. Does that ever happen to you? I look at the cover, it does play into how I feel about a book. Then I read the blurb and about the author. This book must have passed those criteria with flying colors!

After a slow start, getting to know the characters, Proximity took off. I was hooked. From about 60% of the book, I couldn’t stop reading. In fact, I was still reading at 5 this morning. Thank goodness for an ending that didn’t leave me hanging. Sure there was a few threads that need to be taken care of, but I was left elated which, of course, made me wakeful, wondering how the next bits will be taken care of. (Non-spoiler enough?)

I can’t wait for payday so I can get the next book. Thank you M.A. George for writing such a different, kind of story. Oh, and I need to mention how I loved that the characters were very well educated with goals and talents, along with a little romance. Very good!

Sticks, Stones, and Dragon Bones III
Sticks, Stones, and Dragon Bones III by Evelyn Ink
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh, thank you, Evelyn Ink, for letting me read this delightful series and especially this one. This was, in fact, a free-for-review read from Smashwords.

This was a perfect bedtime book. Let me take a moment to say that I have discovered a way to read on my tablet after my husband is asleep. I have downloaded Moon Reader Pro which has the text-to-speech feature. Sure I could have listened on my Kindle but I wanted to read along without turning on the lights. As a kid I used to sneak the flashlight under the covers to read when I was supposed to be asleep. How I wish Ms. Ink’s books and the technology of today was there for me way back when!

Boys: Read this!

Girls: Read this!

These books are about a group of siblings that have been allowed to follow their passions. The youngest, twins, are into pirates and have their own lingo the the older siblings must learn to interpret. The older sisters are forced to care for their younger sisters while drawn into an adventure none have chosen. They are stuck in a world without their parents and must learn who to trust. They decide that they are their own authorities on their lives. All are smart kids who occasionally make mistakes. Meanwhile the action and adventure are highly fun and scary!

Anyone who is starting on book 1 at this point is lucky. I think I might have been better off to read these all in a row. I had a hard time remembering some of the previously met characters and places. Most of the time Ms. Ink gave enough hints that I would be drawn back in. But there were a couple times I felt lost. I don’t blame the author for this. I do have a memory like a sieve. But even then I kept reading and enjoyed the ride.

I could see these books made into movies equal to Harry Potters or Narnia. Again, I say: Where were these books when I was a kid? All adventure books were about boys. Girl books were prissy and boring. Smart readers everywhere will love the characters and the scary fun presented here.

I could go on, but I think I’ve covered everything. Please read these books! FUN!!!

Smashwords – About Smashwords — NaNoWriMo. Not sure I would want to have the sub-draft form of my novels be seen by the public. This does, however, make me think that I could get busy on an outline so as to write a tighter story. Would you think of doing this? How would your prepare? How would you see this working for you?

A little over a  week ago, I was excited to be nominated for the Leibster Award. By Linda G Hill . Thank you, VERY much!

Then I saw the list below for what is required. Yikes! And what is a Leibster Award anyway? I’ve sat on this for a week and finally decided to do a Google search. The first entry is a blog by Sopphey who was kind enough to share her research into the topic. There you can find the history of the Leibster Award and a bit about why it is there.

1. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

3. Where were you born? (city and/or country – whatever you’re comfortable revealing)

I lived most of my life in Southern California. I miss the variety I was able to be a part of there.

4. Are you superstitious?

If I were, would I have picked this beautiful black cat that is sleeping next to me out of the scores of cats in the pound?

5. What’s your favourite fruit?

It used to be apples, in summer it is watermelon. Right now I am in love with the grapes.

Card games (online or real cards), Sudoku, Ravenhearst, Apples to Apples and board

games.
