Well, here we are on the fourth day of the #A2Z challenge.

SO:

Dragons! Yes, today is the fourth day of #CampNano. And I am two days behind. I need to be at 6,668 words written. But somehow, as with everything else like blog reading, housework, journal keeping, I’m way behind. So far I only have 3,006. This is why I like to set up characters and some sort of outline ahead of the month of writing to get started running.

By the way, yes, my favorite dragon, Enelrad (if you reverse the letters you get Darlene), bounded in yesterday, surprising my three main characters as they were practicing their archery. As Liz took aim and let loose, Enelrad telepathed to her ‘Ouch!’ Well, dragons have a sense of humor. She materialized as her natural self, a huge, jewel-toned dragon in all her beauty of purple and turquoise. Then she changed to her go-to human form, Susan, so they could communicate better. Now dragon and dames are getting acquainted. There is a mission. It has to do with the virus going around. One of the young women is a biology/microbiology major. whose mother is a doctor. The mothers heard the fear in their daughters and left their homes driving to the campsite. These gals got game! I can’t wait to see what they all get up to.

As for my paper journal I am four days behind. What Day Is It Anyway? What Time Is It Anyway? And what is the purpose of saying I’m sorry that I haven’t written in the last few days as all the future archeologists will see is a new day and continued writing. They missed nothing. They were lucky I didn’t write as I did as a child, Dear Diary, today I breathed in and out. Your friend, Dar.

So, the prompt for #SoCS is “deep” staying with the AtoZ flow. Thank you Linda G. Hill for your many prompts!

In the forest, Susan led the women deep into a cave system. Darkness had surprised them as they talked and they knew, at this point going home to stay would be useless. Following a stream, as it meandered around rocks and small hills, the saw a mass of ivy climbing a hill. Susan spread the plants. There was a door. She tapped on it, and someone inside opened it. “This is my friend, Dusty. She’s here to help you fight this disease in a way you might not even have thought about. But step inside. It is getting cold and damp out here and I know how much you girls hate the way it makes your hair frizz. Mine, too!

Well, there is the start of my Chapter two! I am not there yet. But it is like watching a coming attraction. I can’t wait to see how we get there! Welcome to Pandemapolypse. That is the name of my newest Haven novel. I am getting excited to get back to the actual typing.

Yikes! I still haven’t done my languages of the day at Duolingo!

Danke schön for reading. Stay at home. Wash your hands. Dance!

Per prompt-maker Linda:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “beside you.” Write about whatever is beside you when you read this prompt. Not when you sit down to write, but whatever is beside you right now. Take note of it if you think you might forget. Enjoy!

I noticed the prompt last night as I was turning off the computer.  As usual, my cell phone was beside me. I have a feeling this will be a common answer to the prompt. If we weren’t holding our phones close enough before this new craziness, we are now. We want to make sure our loved ones are safe, we want to stay updated on all the things going on around the world. It is a way of holding the world close. As close as a prayer. As close as an appendage.

Sure it is where we find the relief while playing a game or two as we wait for the next emergency we hope won’t come. The second-shoe-to-drop feeling that we’ve all been living during our two-week isolation. Hearing the bad news about the curve and checking to make sure it isn’t us. Knowing the numbers will probably get more personal. All that in one little tiny rectangular item. Not even as large as an envelope that our foreparents would have waited to receive to know how their loved ones were. Who knew an item a little over 5 inches could hold so much for us?

 Something I keep telling myself.

And the thing is many of the worries we have in life turn out pretty good. I can’t predict which ones but I do have to report that the Bank issue resolved itself bringing our balance back to helping our food stock to keep us fed for two weeks. Yay!

Another issue that we caught by looking at the bank statement worked out by calling the source. The specialist at that business saw the problem and solved it immediately. Reversed the charge and all was good. I hope you are all finding good things in the midst of all of this like we did today.

Took a walk, several times today. It was just in the yard but the sun was up and two of the four outings I could just wear a T-shirt! Wow! It was wonderful!

Maybe laundry is just a thing you get done in your house. I remember when in the family of six I was chief cook, bottle washer, and laundry matron. Now just getting my own laundry done is something I put off until there just isn’t anything else to wear and I’m down to my last towel. I remedied that today. Woo Hoo!

With fibromyalgia and arthritis, there are days of aches and pains, tiredness, and worry of fever. And this is spring so there is congestion going on. Normally I wouldn’t worry about any of it. I had gotten used to all those feeling and knew what to take to make it better for me. For the last couple of days, and this is just for the record, I’ve had all of that. Breathing is easy. The walks, though not with a lot of energy, were bearable. So I am claiming fibro and allergies. I’m not going anywhere more than I have been before, so I’m not spreading around my nearly hypochondriac sickness.

I did send out a question to our community about a mountain that my adult offspring like to camp at. It is only 12 miles away. And though the road is pretty rough, once you get there the scenery is awesome and the smell of pine trees is so uplifting to the spirit! But I was told that this is the season of wolves and big cats and one should take a gun. Not sure I want to deal with that. Still, it might be a nice ride for us and we could stay near the car. We have seen bear scat up there. But I think it might be a little soon for them. We’ll see if the cabin fever wins over the wilderness fear.

A friend of mine mentioned the importance of paper journaling during a pandemic. I have mentioned, and not followed through, starting to write more by hand. I am going to try and do that.

So the last thing I want to mention is: What a beautiful sunset we had tonight! Picture a lot more reds and pinks.

So this was a combination #WDIIA and #SoCS Thank you, Linda, for the wonderful prompts!

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “figure.” Use the word “figure” any way you’d like. Have fun!

I didn’t know how to start or flow with the word figure. After all, that is more a left-brain sort of word rather than the right-brained sort that would work for me. So I looked at Pixabay.com and found this:

Pixabay.com

And it is amazing that today I got a gift from a friend via a mutual friend who came visiting today.

It had this in it:

I figure a friend who would send something like that to me knows me and loves me. What do you figure?

I figure I’m pretty lucky to be surrounded by love. And Christmas is going to be quite the tale (tail).

Sending out the love to all of you. Especially, my mermaid friend.

Per Linda:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “ect.” Find a word with the letters “ect” in it, and base your post on that word. (Not to be confused with “et cetera,” which is “etc.”) Enjoy!

Perfect! The object of this blog prompt is words that have ‘ect’ in them. And me with a bit of dyslexia have to sort the words that seem to imply “and so on”. Meanwhile the subject on my mind is how Chrome keeps slowing the whole job down. I might type one word but then it all hangs up with “Chrome is not responding.”

No sense in worrying about it. I pick up my knitting and wait. Then I get distracted by Doc Martin. Appendectory here, expectorant there. How about an injection? I’ll never get this blog done. But the affects of computer problems is my own irritation. The effectiveness of getting the writing done, null.

Well, then, if nothing is going to happen here, I guess I’ll go get my yarn connection. The affection I have for soft yarn is purrfect! Oh, that was Teddy putting in his interjection.

A beauty like this guy struts in my yard every day. He is not ours. Neither is his matching hen or a white hen. They wander our yard like they own the place. That’s okay with me as I think that cock-a-doodle-doo protects our three quieter hens.

Pixabay.com

Our three look like this one. We had four but a hawk got one of them. My brother had them all named. But I don’t know them that intimately. I do take care of one of their meals of the day. I have two peanut butter toasted sandwiches for breakfast. Kali gets one little corner and the chickens get the crusts. I am a vegetarian by nature. I am allergic to egg whites to the extent that I can’t get the flu shots or others that are based in albumin. But I love the sounds of the clucking and crowing all over my yard. They do their part to scratch out bugs and fertilize the soil. And my husband and brother enjoy the eggs. Me? I’m hoping for wee peep-peeps! But our girls attack the rooster if he comes near. Yay! Hens-lib! ??

Oh, that grass seen in the above pictures? That is truly greener on the other side of the fence. Our neighbor has managed to make and keep a beautiful lawn. We barely manage to keep the sagebrush away from our house.

Other animal sounds we hear around here lately are coyotes and their pups.  One poor girl here was followed to the bus stop by a coyote. She was smart and stood tall and yelled and it ran away. But they can be quite dangerous for people and pets. We have to keep our gate closed and watch carefully for those who might jump over into our yard. Kali and the chickens are in danger. As are the two stray cats that have been here even before we moved here. Rosey and Teddy are indoor felines. Meow!

Our other neighbor has turkeys. When we gave ours away he got some of his own so the gobbles are still a welcome sound.

What doesn’t make sound, that we can hear here are the alpacas that are across the way. They are cute. I wish I had one. Can you imagine the yarn I could get if I got good at alpaca husbandry?

We have seen bear droppings at the campground twelve miles away. That is a sound I don’t want to hear! GRRRowl!

Oh, I just thought of the deer and antelope that play around this here range. Kind of like the baaing of lambs or goats that some neighbors have. There are a few horses. Neigh, not a lot. Ducks and geese quack their honks and especially at sunset as they settle down.

The most annoying, yet cute sound? Oh, my goodness. This mildish winter has brought in the mice. We have cute mice with shiny coats. The other day I was reaching in a cabinet for a can of beans and I heard a high pitch bunch of squeaks. It is no fun to live in the country when you find things like that.  My brother found them and the chickens ate them up. Yes, I have tears in my eyes as I think of it. Soon after he caught a few bigger mice in traps.

I thought you might enjoy what our outdoor friends do that I have seen happen.

I just remembered the wonderful sound of last summer. We had some frogs somewhere between our yard and the nearest neighbor. The co-roaking was so cool! I hope we get it again this year, By the way, the weather is getting warmer and my son and I have made plans to start walking a bit. We spell out the word W-A-L-K so Kali doesn’t get too crazy. Her whining can quickly turn into barking lectures of great magnitude!

Per Linda:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “animal sounds.” Write about the sounds animals make and how you experience them. Have fun!

Per Linda:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “cheek.” Use it as a noun or a verb. Enjoy!

My stream takes me from songs that talk about cheek to cheek to cheeky. I took a nap thinking about this. When I nap I try to leave on the TV so that my mind won’t think it is night time. The best sleeping shows for me have David Attenborough talking about nature and the world we live on.

I woke up laughing at the cheekiness of his narrative of a commercial about The Walking Dead. He was explaining about the whisperers and what their habitat was and what they needed to survive. I almost thought it was in my dream but it was an actual commercial. Does that define cheeky? It was funny.

I hope you are all having a nice weekend. We woke up to snow today and it is supposed to snow again tonight. Our poor plants keep having a hard time with these weird weather surges. Our mesquite bush is already leafing out. The trees have buds. I don’t mind the snow if it stays as it makes everything look pure and clean. But quick melting snow leave us with a muddy mess. Oh, well. I’m glad we didn’t have a -40 winter.

Anybody watch Picard? We loved it so far.

Per Linda:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “choices.” Base your post on the subject of making small, uneventful choices. Enjoy!

Come on! Decide already!

I can’t tell you how often people have yelled that at me. Small decisions are the hardest of choices. It is easy to do some of those big ones. Taking care of the planet, giving people fresh air and water. Being kind to everyone and all animals. Easy peasy.

But which color? Which rice? Which T-shirt?

This is a life long problem. When I was a girl my mom would take us to the library. I could check out ten books. That was lucky because I wouldn’t be able to make up my mind which books would grab me within three weeks. Should I go for the joke books, or more Mary Poppins or the guy with the penguins? Oh, maybe this horse book? Nancy Drew, I think I’m on book nine. Artbooks are fun. I must get at least one book from the adult section because I can read them!

So an hour or so later and mom and brothers yelling, in whispers, ‘Come on!’

The errand started out looking like this:

No, I wasn’t that cute. Though this could have been my daughter (with a similar affliction). But this is from Pixabay.com

But I would leave weighed down like this with ten books, ALWAYS!

No, this isn’t me. This might be the pile I took to the table to sort through to get my ten. And I don’t like a couple of these books. It was the closest to what I wanted to use as an example of my inability to make simple choices. Again, this is from Pixabay.com

Happy February, everyone!

Per Linda:

Your prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “last call.” Talk about the enterprise (sales or service) conducted by the last phone call you received from a business you’re not associated with (i.e. your workplace), or talk about that phone conversation itself. Have fun!

Okay. I can’t fully join in the prompt. I hate the phone. I think I have said this elsewhere on the blog. If it comes to calling someone, even people I love, I get shaky and sweaty. I don’t understand it. I was the teen that had a mile-long wire attached to my phone, and an even longer coiled wire attached to the receiver. I could wander anywhere in the house and out on the porches outside.  I could be on the phone for hours. We could chatter on and on.

Fast forward half a century and I can’t make service calls. If it is an important call I have my husband do the talking. He has one of those deep in-charge voices that gets the job done and doesn’t seem to have the throw-the-phone-across-the-room syndrome.

On the other hand, I love meeting with people I love on FaceBook IMs or Skype. Especially now that you can talk to a couple people at a time. I love seeing the faces and the environment my loved-ones are in. It is the next best thing to being there. That being impossible due to weather and finances.

My last video call was with my friends. Before one of them had a heart attack and went to the hospital. Stents were inserted and my friend is home, thank all that is good. Gosh, if I lived there I would have been able to be moral support. I remember seeing my friends’ faces on that last call and feeling my eyes well up with love for both of them. I love our calls.

When my friend got home from the hospital, she found a key from one of her sisters. It was a key to the TARDIS. Gosh, do I wish we had one to go back and forth in time and space and seeing who you want when you want and when you need to.

Anyone want to join on a flight with me on this ‘last call’ phone booth?

Per Linda:

Your prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “movie title.” Take the title of the last movie you watched (just the title, not the premise of the movie), and base your post on that title. Have fun!

So Saturdays we often watch disaster movies when we are tired of watching shows about animals and veterinarians.  If we aren’t in the middle of a binge. Today’s movie was Day After Tomorrow. It is a fun go-to for us if we are both busy writing or knitting or reading.

The day after tomorrow is Monday. Cloudy, cold. But the day after that may have snow. I hope the snow we have right now isn’t gone so that soon the world will be as white as the world in the movie. No, I don’t want it that cold. I certainly don’t want to have to move to South America to get warm.

I promised that the second slipper sock would be done by today and: Ta DA!

I can’t wait to make more of these for the charity. I can imagine people stuck in bed needing to have warm feet. Again, this is done on the blue, 24-peg Knifty Knitter loom with (I think) homespun. It had to be a cuff down as the toe-up Kitchener doesn’t work well with this yarn. The cuff is e-wrapped and folded. The rest was a combo of mostly flat-knit or u-wrap.

I still have three socks on separate looms, a hat, and about three toys in the process. So I can’t tell you what will be finished the day after tomorrow.

I wish I could tell you what the next binge is for the day after tomorrow. We seem to be at a loss since finishing Gilmore Girls. Please don’t groan. My daughter tried to get me to watch them with her when she was in high school but I was working and very busy and just couldn’t get into it. When I finally got to it I groaned. I seemed to have run out of anything interesting. Sometimes you just have to give a book or a movie a chance. After watching the first few episodes alone, my husband came in and got addicted, too.

Being able to move through the last few decades, seeing old actor ‘friends’, the music and movie references just made this so much fun. And associating it with my daughter, empty nesting and the like made it a sinus clearer! It is weird that I haven’t needed my nasal spray or anything since watching it. We watched all of it and then the Seasons In The Life. Gosh, I miss it! I may have to go back and start again!

Any suggestions for our next binge?
