Archive for January, 2020

This was the nearest book as we still have Christmas happening in our Christmas Valley home. I misread the instructions. I thought I was to use the first three words in the first full sentence. So there’s that. Here’s the first real page:

The first three words sang to me from this book I’ve yet to read: On the tenth of … the next… December didn’t fit in the rules but called to me as it is the day after my birthday. The tenth is a day late but usually, especially for Sagittarius beings, part of the month of birthday/Christmas a confusion of winter wear and honest attempts to make it special. But somehow, I feel it special now without any presents. Can anyone believe when they are seventy? But I still do the snow dance and get happy over certain songs.

That was a sidetrack. I think I meant to go through how Christmas is still here. AND how I still haven’t read this book. I pack it away with the Christmas decor. I do love Cornelia Funke books. And aren’t those pictures cute?

I know this is supposed to be a stream but I feel that was the Jot needed to suffice. Knitting and binging Gilmore Girls (were mid-fifth season) are distracting the writer in me. I hope you all are having a great weekend! By the way, another snow is expected tonight so the little bit leftover is going to get some friends.

And here were the instructions per Linda that I obviously didn’t read close enough:

Your prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “the first 3 words of the first full sentence.” Okay, follow me here. This is what I want you to do: 1. Grab the closest book to you when you sit down to write your post. 2. Open it to a random page. 3. Locate the first complete sentence on that page. 4. Use the first three words of that sentence to start your post, then take it from there–write whatever comes to mind. That’s it! Have fun!

A Duel in Time: A Time Travel Romance (Thief in Time Book 5)A Duel in Time: A Time Travel Romance by Cidney Swanson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Inspirational! Who doesn’t enjoy a good time-travel book? This one addresses the subject of the musical Hamilton. What fun! And now I have to go find the books about him and the sheet music to play with, and learn to sing the tunes like I did with Phantom and Les Miz.

But the book isn’t all about the musical. It covered a lot about the history and character of the man, statesman, politician, Alexander Hamilton. And the fictitious twins of this century and their coming of age issues.

I always enjoy books by Cidney Swanson. I always have to say that her Saving Mars series is my favorite but all her work is so fantastic it is only that I have to be the old grown-up with left-over space-travel dreams that I gravitate to those books. But Time-Travel is fun, and educational and inspires me so much! Enjoy! I did!

Just Jot It January — Scrumptious

In answer to the crossed fingers:

Look at that scrumptious white stuff!

You can even see it between the trees that are still up:

I hear there are days ahead full of snow. Let’s hope so!

JuJoJan / 1LinerWed — Happiness

Happiness is January Snow!

This one-liner has changed several times today. Happiness is a warm puppy was taken. Well done, Winston! So Kali wouldn’t stand in his shadow. But it was snowing around noon. Even stayed on the ground. Now it is muddy. The trees are budding out thinking this is Spring. Someone isn’t doing the snow dance. You know who you are! I’m told that after nine tonight we might get that white stuff that hides the ugly weeds that didn’t go away. So I’ll stay with the above bold line and claim it!

Just Jot It January — Mix

Per Linda:  Your prompt for JusJoJan January 7th, 2020, is “mix.” Use the word “mix” any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Yes, knitting is my life. Sorry. I looked all over the Pixabay for a good picture to inspire me to write about the prompt, mix. This sock is what came to mind. And it is for my daughter who is celebrating her birthday. Wow, my offspring are getting old! I’m almost to the heel stage. I do love this magical self-striping yarn. It really mixes it up, don’t you think?

I’m just streaming even though it is not Saturday.

Hey, how many of you are food purists? What I mean is when you get a plate of food do you mix all your food together or try very hard to keep it all separated? I tend to be a purist. All my life. I remember when I was a candy striper and I had this nice guy I took care of. He was a paraplegic. He could paint with the brush between his teeth. He was amazing. When it came time for me to feed him I was shocked.

“Mix it all up!” he said to me with passion.

I was repulsed. I mixed a little together for each bite but he nearly yelled at me. He was happy when I was more violent with my mixing. Now I remember his name, Frank. He was the bright spot of my candy striping days.

One day, I walked into his ward and saw his room empty. I asked, “Where’s Frank?” I was ready to take him on his daily walk.

“We’re sorry…”

“He went home?” I asked in the naive sixteen-year-old voice.

The nurse shook her head sadly and told me he died. He was the first person I had lost to death. Now that I am 70 I think I know more people gone than here. That death made me see I wouldn’t be able to handle being a nurse or doctor. I wish I would have had this philosophy back then. I think that medicine would have been in my future.

Aw, but all that standing! Never mind. Pipe-dreams. They do tend to send my head into a big mixed-up mess.

Back to the question: Are you a purist or mixer?

Made it Monday

Well, I picked up this cute little loom on Wish. It was cheap so I thought it would be fun to try. That and it was cheap!

Cute, huh? I put it on the keyboard so that you could see how small it is. There was a learning curve. I may have ripped out one nearly whole sock and reknitted, then frogged again. Ugh! I don’t blame the cute little loom. I blame the soft wonderful yarn that separated sometimes and caused little fuzzballs.

Then the worst thing! Right at the toe of the second sock, I ran out of the gray yarn. Ugh, again! But I found this red homespun type yarn that was as soft as the gray yarn. I couldn’t find anything that l matched so I figured a contrast might pull it off. The gray was yarn from my daughter and the socks are for my son. I think he likes them. And they fit!

If he were a little kid that red toe could differentiate right and left foot. But a grown man in his forties. I’ve got nothing. He said thank you. I shouldn’t have. “Mom, you already made me a hat.” I hope he likes them. He did like the first one and said it was soft and would be nice to wear in the evening while watching TV. So he’ll be comfortable and no one will see the red toe and make fun of him. It’s a possibility. Hey, look at that! I was able to use the prompt for Just Jot It January! Oh, and he did take them with a smile. There’s that!

Review: Brave by Rose McGowan

BraveBrave by Rose McGowan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Rating memoirs are not my thing. It’s a life. Someone else’s. But in this case, her negatives were lessons for all of us. Some might say she was too angry or strident. But with good reason. I was happy to be able to listen to Rose’s voice on the Audible version.

There is so much I want to say about this book, but I don’t want to give anything away. As strong as Ms. McGowan comes across, I believe this is a book everyone should read or hear. In fact, I think the audio gives the story more veracity. It is the story of women, especially those in the Hollywood scene, but much of what happened has happened in other businesses.

Please, give it a chance and learn what is there for you to learn. I may try to reread it in a couple of years. Hopefully, by then, society will have become more humane. I hope I am not wishing, and it happens from all of us becoming more aware and intolerant of inequality.

Per Linda:  Your prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “ow.” Find a word that contains “ow” or use it as a word in your post. Have fun!

Wow! Well, quite the difference from Linda’s SoCS, with all the pretty snow pictures. She says Christmas hasn’t been white most of the time since she moved to her home. We’ve been here in Christmas Valley four years and except for this year, it has snowed for a lot of the Halloweens, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This year it looks like April. We even have some grass. Yes, we had a dusting last night but I didn’t see much of that, night owl that I am, it was melted away by the time I got up. April snow! Except the day isn’t as long as it should be.

The thing is most of my growing up time, I lived in Sunny Southern California. If we wanted snow we would drive up to Big Bear and see it and come home to get warm. I didn’t understand the Christmas cards and the wintery wonderland stuff. Give me a good beach and I’m happy.

Reno was nice. but it was big-city snow. Dirty icky snow. Chrismas Valley lived up to its name every year. Beautiful snow with perfect timing. Well, my husband may not think the snow was perfect when he broke his shoulder walking down our driveway a couple years ago. But it was the layers of pretty over icy. Deceiving snow. It looks soft like things look when I don’t have on my glasses, but it was mean snow. OW!

Do you all still have your trees up? We do. It had snowed a little before we erected our little forest of three trees. I refuse to take it down until there is real winter going on here! I will try to take a picture through the window if it happens. What if there will be no more snow? What if this is the opposite of the Starks? Spring is coming. And it will last years and all we will have is Spring and Summer for the rest of our lives. If I only had a pool, that would be okay, I think. Oh, and we need to get rid of the summer fires. Sorry, Australia. Ours wasn’t as bad. But it does seem to be pointing to global warming. Now I’m sadder, madder and scared. Scowl, frown, twitching brows. GROWL!

So Weather Underground says we may have snow next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Let’s grab that piece of hope, okay? Now I will take that bow. Yay! I actually wrote something for a minute!

By the way, I am going to try and edit and write every day this month. I’ll keep the commitment easy to keep. I’ll let you know when I do. I’m done being down. My has time flown! I did leave a few -ow words out there for others. I didn’t want to be a sow!

Everything My Mother Taught MeEverything My Mother Taught Me by Alice Hoffman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I absolutely love Alice Hoffman’s writing. I couldn’t resist when I saw this for free on Audible. And this did have her great storytelling. The narrator, Brittany Pressley, was superb.

The story kept me interested. But the end came too soon I didn’t realize it was a short story until it ended. And that is my biggest problem with this audiobook. I don’t like short stories. They leave me wanting more. I want to know what happens next.

Still, it was a delicious story.

The Half-Life of Marie CurieThe Half-Life of Marie Curie by Lauren Gunderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a quick listen on Audible. It was free. Only an hour and fifteen minutes. Narrators: Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany made you feel you were watching a movie. I’m not sure if it is all factual from Marie Curie’s life but it seemed plausible. I loved the messages for women’s rights given life.

If you get the chance it is a good read/listen.
