Black BeautyBlack Beauty by Anna Sewell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Yes, I did go through that phase as a pre-teen, when I read every book about horses possible. Black Beauty was an important part of that literary diet. I loved it then. But how would that translate to my old-lady brain? It was better!

The Amazon page says it is for kids 9-12. That may have been so a generation ago, but now the vocabulary and historical references don’t play out quite as well. In a well-structured class program, it could be a great lesson plan anchor to cover history, equines, medicine, weather and many other subject-matter for an all inclusive study. The best is the lessons of kindness. This is a lesson that covers all generations and all religions or philosophies. And we here it all from the horse’s mouth. Animals understand kindness.

Peter Batchelor was the narrator in this version of the story. I was lucky to pick up the Kindle version from Kindle Unlimited and for a tiny fee I got the Whispersync Audible narration. He did a marvelous job bringing all the characters to life. I highly recommend that everyone read this classic!

TracksTracks by Robyn Davidson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh, how I hated to see the end of this story. I absolutely loved it! I was lucky enough to pick it up on Kindle Unlimited. Then I saw that there was an Audible version. I bought that. I’m glad I did. I loved listening to Angie Milliken tell me the story. Even though the KU went back to Amazon, I still have the story to listen to again, later.

When I was a girl, at the zoo, I was talking to a camel and he spit at me. Yuck! I hated camels ever since. But between Robyn Davidson’s story and Angie Milliken’s voice I wish I could be around camels, make friends with them.

This is the first book in a long time that I didn’t try to fast forward. There’s no speed reading about a trek across Australia. It was a long hike. I wanted to relish every word of it. If I can’t do the trek myself I will absorb the experience vicariously.

Being alone, Robyn shared her inner conflicts along the track. These were worries about the world in general or psychological problems. Both were discussed with frankness. She alternately shared wonders of Australia’s splendor or the barren rottenness, left overs of the non-ecologically sound non-natives. All the while keeping up with her four camels and her dog.

Shoot! This review doesn’t go near the wonder I felt as I read and listened to it. If you get the chance, please pick of a copy for yourself. I look forward to seeing the movie!

How to Teach your Cat to use a Scratching Post (And not Destroy the Furniture)How to Teach your Cat to use a Scratching Post by By Bruce Carlley

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a little short book just for giving ideas to help your cat to learn NOT to scratch your furniture. Sadly my cat never read it! Maybe some of these ideas will work for you. It is only $.99 right now. I got it when it was free. Enjoy!

Sacred Siamese: Essential Care Guide For Siamese Cat Owners From A Siamese Lover: A HISTORY OF THE SIAMESE BREED, A DETAILED CARE GUIDE FOR SIAMESE CAT ... - INCLUDING KITTEN, RESCUES, COLOR PICTURESSacred Siamese: Essential Care Guide For Siamese Cat Owners From A Siamese Lover: A HISTORY OF THE SIAMESE BREED, A DETAILED CARE GUIDE FOR SIAMESE CAT … – INCLUDING KITTEN, RESCUES, COLOR PICTURES by Jessica Thompson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love Siamese cats! I had one for about 16 years and here at a decade later I still miss her so much. Our kitty was a rescue and wasn’t pure-breed. But the pictures in this book made me miss her even more. I would love to take in another Siamese someday.

This book was full of photos and information about this marvelous breed. I learned a few things. But I have to admit that I came out of the book still confused about the words points and seal-points. That may be my own inability to read and retain information properly–or it may be that it wasn’t clear in the book. Still it is worth enjoying and learning what you can.

Beautiful Black Cats: A collection of photographs of black catsBeautiful Black Cats: A collection of photographs of black cats by Precious The Cat

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

AS an animal lover I love looking at picture books about different animals. As a black cat owner I LOVE pictures of cats like mine. Since my black cat was a rescue kitty, we didn’t get to see her as a kitten, so some of these pictures could easily be what she looked like when she was tiny.

The book leaves me smiling. But I think it might have been better to not have the credits right under the picture but tuck it away in the back so that the photos can stand alone. It was the only thing I didn’t like about the book.

Horses: Amazing Photos and Facts about ThemHorses: Amazing Photos and Facts about Them by DC Waits

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I was looking for visual inspiration for my NaNoWriMo. It is about equine type people and I thought the more pictures I could look at the better. This served the purpose, but barely.

The photos are divine. But there is a need for an editor in the captions beneath each picture. Still. I got it for free. What was it I was hoping for? Great for children who haven’t learned to read yet. Or, like me, folks who like to see horses.

The Horse Book (HC Picture Books 13)The Horse Book by Ben Holden-Crowther

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Since my NaNoWriMo is/was about equine people I wanted just pictures for visual inspiration. This book filled the bill perfectly. I might have wanted more, especially of ponies. But these are marvelous photos of horses and landscapes.

101 Fish Pictures101 Fish Pictures by Lily Endicott

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pictures. Give me pictures. I often pick up picture books for Kindle as I can enjoy beautiful pictures of just about anything. My recent NaNoWriMo novel included horses and centaurs so I picked up picture books on horses. This book just came up and I always love looking at fish. We don’t have room for an aquarium so pictures will have to do.

When I feel the need I will pull this one back up and just relax my eyes on these photos. I wish this was made into a screensaver app. I would love it! Oh, the nice part is that this one has no words. Although I would have liked to have the fish identified for my curiosity. But I could look it up if I wanted, I suppose.

Horses: Amazing Pictures and Fun Horse Facts for Kids (and Parents)Horses: Amazing Pictures and Fun Horse Facts for Kids by Susan Palmer

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Because I am writing about equines in my nano novel (NaNoWriMo.org). I needed a little inspiration. This book was free so I thought I’d take a chance.

There were not as many pictures as I really wanted. But there was one at the beginning of each chapter. This seems to be a book for the third to sixth grader who is interested in learning about horses. Though I am not equestrian scholar, far from it, I didn’t expect to learn anything. But I did! So I would say that even though it’s aimed at third to sixth graders, I think anybody could read this and learn something. And if you beating on Kindle Fire or on a tablet the pictures are beautiful. And it gave me the inspiration I needed.
