The above double toy (finished today), from following instructions Denise of Loomahat.com on this YouTube tutorial:

Though I like making the blanket and getting better at it, I don’t like sewing on the bits and pieces. I think they are cute and I think someone will find comfort in this toy, I need a break. And I bet you guys need something else to look at here.

But I had to share the toy because of the prompt for today’s challenge of the Stream of Consciousness Saturday. Thank you Linda G. Hill for the fun prompts!

Frightening

Last night as I wrote my blog, the TV was off. My husband was in another room. I was alone. I glanced up at the TV and saw this:

It looks like a space monster. Or an Ood. The space one the right held my reflection. If I was young or a scardy-cat, I might have screamed. Instead I looked around and saw that the lamp next to me appeared as a forehead and eyes. The rest of the monster was just things on the shelf beneath the lamp. I just thought I’d share the scare. You’re welcome!

One-Liner Wednesday

Wow! Thank goodness for Wednesday! (That’s all I have!)

One-Liner Wednesday is the challenge I may not have passed. But thanks for the fun, Linda G. Hill.

I saw the above on FaceBook today and giggled.

Now at 10:52PM, I have three furry people sleeping.

Like this one:

Teddy meditates after licking the gravy from his wet food. We feed these monsters so late so that they will let us sleep all night.

It just happened. That nightly ritual. “Dad” gets the cats off his lap and I start giving the cheer to Kali about what is happening in the kitchen. Some would say these guys are spoiled. I don’t know. Yes, there is half a minute that each dish is warmed in the microwave. Then “Dad” brings the dishes in our room and puts down Rosey’s first. Kali waits patiently as hers is second, Then Prince Teddy must be found and picked up and placed in front of his food.

Then the chewing and chomping and slurping begins. To the observer, everyone is in their places. Until they aren’t. Teddy finished with gravy jumps up on my bed and takes a quick bath and stares off into space. Rosey and Kali exchange bowls. Then Rosey finishes Teddy’s and Kali makes sure they are all empty. Sometimes I find the bowls in the bathroom or under the bed, they are so thorough in their nightly gnashings.

Kali then settles near me and Rosey gets back to “Dad’s” lap. The rest of the night they are quiet.

If you didn’t know, Chew/choo was the prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday. Thank you Linda G. Hill for this fun challenge.

Happy Independence Day to my USA friends! (Midnight is an hour and ten minutes away)

This is a prompt challenge by Linda  G. Hill. Thanks for the fun!

The Good News and Bad News Part 2

Under sepia skies, I bade a tearful goodbye to my friend. It was a nice long visit, though never long enough, you know? The good news was we didn’t get hit by lightning that was horribly close. We were dry, though the rain was torrential. By the time the storm was going strong, she was in a motel down the street to make an early departure the next day. We were back into our house and into our normal day by day lives.

The whole journey started out right. We got to Bend to be ready for my husband’s operation. His part was followed through perfectly. His ride came through the middle of the night. He even got the numbing shots and was ready for surgery.

I woke early as I knew his actual operation was to start at 7. I texted him to see how he was. He called me with the voice of depression. “Bad news,” he said.

Anyone who has ever had a person start a conversation that in a sad quiet voice knows the extreme levels the imagination goes to. Well, that he was talking meant he wasn’t dead. But did they chop off his arm? What happened?

The cadaver bone didn’t get delivered. (That very sentence makes one see the good news and bad news, ya know?) That was how they were going to fix his shoulder. Surgery was canceled. Could we come and get him and take him home?

My friend had a motel room for two days. Though it was to help me and my husband, it was part of a very expensive vacation for her. If she tried to get out of the second day, she’d have to pay for it anyway. She was thinking we could take him home then come back and spend the second night. That trip is an hour and a half. The math of that trip would have been three hours to spend a night then the ninety minutes back down to our house again. That is a lot of driving!

The plus side, and possibly our selling point for staying, was how insanely comfortable the beds were. I got my own little room and for the first time in ages, I slept a whole night without getting up every hour! My friend says hers was the same.

As it turned out C found that his ride hadn’t left town so he got a ride back home where he could catch up on sleep and we got to stay that last night. Woohoo!

Both of us have health issues that make true tourism next to impossible, but we got to run some errands and just hang out.

Most importantly, we were able to find a microwave to replace the broken one at home. I knew we’d be welcomed home with that achieved.

Yeah, not that one. That’s a Pixabay picture.

So anyway, though things are back to normal for now. Hubs has to be back middle of next month to try the surgery again. This time my friend can’t come and help me. But I suspect that as summer proceeds I will be feeling less pain and be more ready to make the drives myself. The warmth of summer always helps me.

I missed all of you and will have to take a few days to catch up on all your blogs. Hope you’re having a great summer so far! S’up?!

One-Liner Wednesday

The choices: clean, binge, or knit? Going to try all three.

Linda G. Hill created this fun challenge. Glad I had a few minutes before midnight to post!

Possible Absence

I thought I should use this quieter moment to let you all know that after half a year of daily posting, I may be missing in the next few days. The good news comes first, my friend is coming over on her vacation to visit us. Can’t wait for that.

The bad news is that my husband’s last shoulder surgery didn’t work and he needs another surgery on the 24th. He broke that shoulder two winters ago so has had a lot of work done since. He will be in the hospital for a couple days. My friend will be staying with me at the nearby motel so that we can drive him home. They don’t have accommodations for family or friends at the hospital.

Good news, tomorrow may be our last day bingeing on Season 3 of Outlander. Bad news, we may have to actually pay for Hulu Starz just to continue. But back to good news, I get to see my friend!

Hanging on the good news here! See ya when I can!

My Latest Binges

My pain requires distractions. I can knit (loom-knit) to keep my hands busy. I watch shows to keep the mind occupied during the day. Those who might criticize might take drugs for your pains. They don’t work for me. This way, something productive happens while I watch or listen to a story.

Sometimes my brother and son and or husband join me. I like having others to watch with. I will watch it alone, but I want others with me because then we can talk about the show and things I might have missed or interpreted otherwise. How do you like watching shows, alone or in groups?

So my newest favorite is Outlander, It has surprised all of us how much we like this show. In fact, I am starting to read it (listen on Audible, too) tonight.

When my brother and son and husband aren’t available to watch with me, I am working my way through Riverdale, which can be a bit much even for me.

And Royal Pains, which is getting better in the later seasons. My biggest complaint is the little brother and how irritating he can be, but as he is married and has a wife to pull him in line, it grows on you. The doctor does seem to have a lot of McGivers using balloons.

We are finally caught up on Fear of the Walking Dead. Tonight’s show was fun with the old west ghost town. And I laughed so hard a couple weeks ago when there were flying zombies!

And now we’re into NOS4A2 It isn’t as scary as it seems on the commercials. In fact, it is kind of interesting.

My husband loves and has drawn me into Jessica Jones. We’re watching the latest season.

What are you watching?

Parable of the Sower (Earthseed, #1)

Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What an adventure!

Fledgling was the last book I read by Octavia E. Butler. I liked that it had a different take and more diversity than many other ‘vampire’ book. So I wanted to see more by this author.

This book takes the apocalyptic point of view from the beginning of the end. Our main character is the daughter of a preacher. She is black but the color of her skin is not the point. She is a teenager in a protected community that suddenly isn’t. As a teen, she sees things her own way, not like her parents or anyone else. So it is a story of growing up in social, physical, and psychological chaos.

I have to admit to loving the story. I did get tired of the God Seed of her making against the biblical verses of her father. But it was her experience so I accepted it as the character point of view not preaching to the reader. This blended with her bringing together a group of people wandering up the California highway and byways while protecting each other and defending their rights to live in this new world.

Though the story leaves the reader in a safe place, not a cliffhanger, I feel the need to read the next and see what happens now that they have settled. My e-library had this one but not the next so I requested they get it.

It must be nice for black readers to have stories that reflect them. I’m not black but I would love to see diversity more often. As much as I am loving seeing female authors writing strong female characters, let’s see more of the female experience in other races and experiences. Maybe our future generations of people will have books written from all points of view encouraging the reading experience by all society! I’d love to read more about women who are in their sixties and seventies and older! Let’s make sure everyone gets to see the world from characters like them!

If you read the above you will notice I used the prompt word ‘social’ a couple times. I was going to do two separate posts but computer issues prevented it. So this is a combo of Review and Stream of Consciousness Saturday.
