Belated Birthday Present

20170224_234206.jpg

This was supposed to be finished three days ago. Funny thing is… I started this when my brother had to walk 8 miles round trip to and from work. He has since got himself a car. Still, he says he needs it. It’ll wrap around his neck a couple times (more if he doesn’t treat me right 😉  ). That little tiny wad of yarn is all that was left of the skein. This scarf took up nearly the whole skein! I still have to do some minor things before giving it to him but he’ll get it before lunch tomorrow. By the way, this is from the three skeins my daughter gave me for my birthday on December 9th when I got Kali.

When you cut something with scissors, do you move your jaw (as if you were about to chew)?

I don’t think so. But along those same lines, I nearly always find myself smiling when I post a smiley face. 🙂 Does that happen to anyone else?

Do you chew your pens and pencils?

I did in grade school. Don’t know why I stopped. It may have been teasing along the lines of getting lead poisoning. Yes, I was/am rather gullible. I remember those pencils that looked like a beaver had gotten a hold on them, just below the perfectly intact eraser. I learned to do it lower so as to make two pencils out of one. And yes, I know now that that stuff is graphite. But I still don’t put them in my mouth anymore. I think I became a germaphobe.

Are you a collector of anything?  If so what?

Suddenly, YARN!  But dragons, sheet music and instruments. Oh, looms!

20170127_233310

By the way, I finished two of these projects. Still working on the blue scarf for my brother for his birthday tomorrow–YIKES! I need to get finished! I have about 14 looms now and usually have two to five projects going at once. Oh! Books! I used to have thousands of tree books, but with moving and needing more space that got widdled down to two shelves and the need for two more. BUT I have about 8K Kindle books. With my bad tracking and focus, I found I do better reading with text-to-speech on. Tree books never had that for me.

What size is your bed?

Twin. But with three pets taking it over I need a bigger one! Hubby sleeps in a recliner for his apnea. With his broken shoulder and arthritis, he needs this space that is safe from a flailing spouse. Yes, with my fibro I can flip flop all night long. Only the dog has learned to stay with me and not get hurt.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

We have found a good space with our lives. There is always too much food–brother works at a produce store. He finally has a car to drive the 8-mile round-trip to work and an occasional errand. Can’t wait for things to dry and get warmer as we plan to explore our Oregon Outback. So last week falls into that. And my friends and I are learning how to connect on Google Hang-outs so I don’t miss them nearly as much.

Can I hope for Spring? I want to start going outside but the wind is so awful and cold and snow seems to be in the forecast. So I look forward to seeing my friends on the Hang-Out.

I made this using this YouTube from LoomAHat The only difference was that I had already rib stitched K2P2 rather than the K1P1 that she (Denise M Canela) recommends. Other that that I think this ear warmer scarf turned out great! I started another in green almost immediately.

Another difference is that I had Kali on my lap nearly all the time I was looming. Just like she is right now as I type this. From left to right: pillow, Kali, my leg (pink sweatpants) and laptop.

Stuck like glue! I feel loved!

When I mentioned to my hubby the word of the day, he said, “Which ham? Rosie, Teddy, or Kali? Between them you have a whole hog!”

img_20170212_1501474_rewind

Above starting at the ginger, Teddy. Black bump is Rosie. Kali is hogging the foreground. Hard to believe they can now get along like this. Now they have races up and down the hallway sounding like a herd of elephants!

Now back to the weather. Rain and snow predicted for the next few days. More adventures with Kali and friends to follow.

The winds dried up a lot of the water. The rest froze. It would seem life is better. But the barometric pressure is doing the rollercoaster thing. When that happens and I start flaring the only thing I can think to do is nap.

Here is my napping partner after I got up and came back to bed–cover hogger!

There. Now that we’ve piled them up neatly we can start a good fire to keep us warm while we let our collective consciousness flow. Nice. Hot cocoa and marshmallows would be nice. But in all this imagining, I feel one consciousness. Everyone seems off on their own ventures so I guess this one is up to me. Pass the melty s’more? Please? Please? Please?

The empty echo reminded me that I may be one of the only folks in the world who has never had one of those yummy tidbits. Went camping with the family all of my childhood yet no one in my family had ever eaten one–at least back then. Now, with diabetes, I guess it is good no one is here to pass me one. They do sound decadent.

All this reminds me of those camping days. The family would go on three-week vacations. Mom saved up every penny and Dad saved up every bit of vacation time. I had a love-hate relationship with camping. I have memories of sitting up on the highest rocks with pencils, crayons, papers to draw on and lots of books. Those peaceful moments away from family were the best.

I have memories of sitting up on the highest rocks with pencils, crayons, papers to draw on and lots of books. Those peaceful moments away from family were the best.

Waking in the cold with the tiny pebbles eating their way through flattened blowup raft-bed, sleeping bag, and my very flesh. Not the best memory. Worse, waiting for the sun to warm the world enough to crawl out of the sleeping bag to make the mad rush to the stinky non-flushable toilet maddeningly painful.

Evening ranger talks and sing-a-longs with educational slides–wonderful! Daytime hikes with rangers to learn of local flora and fauna–Heavenly.

Dirty nails, dirty everything. Cold baths in the tent. Dragging heavy pails of water from the faucet that seemed miles away, getting to camp soaking wet from being splashed the whole way, then still having to wash dishes in the plastic container–Ugh!

Was it any wonder that by the time I was an adult I refused to camp unless there was an automatic dishwasher, washer, dryer, full bathroom facilities, comfy beds, etc.?

Still, I remember the time, BC (before children), that their father and I were forced to camp out under the stars. We got to camp too late to set up a tent.We zipped our sleeping bags together to make it cozy for the newlyweds we were. A biker had this campsite alone and he invited us to share his site. A little scary but he seemed nice. But the biker would prove to be the least of our worries.

As morning came around I heard bumping and crashing. An old pro at camping, I knew bears were looking for food. I was on my back looking up at the sky through the tree branches. Suddenly a big black nose was sniffing at my nose. I closed my eyes and hoped sniffing was all this brute was going to do. As soon as I felt the footsteps walking away, I nudged my husband and whispered, “Bear.”

No sooner had I said that there was a great big string of obscenities shouted as the biker woke to the same visitor. He scared the bear so much that the bear knocked everything off the table and cookstove and slid down the hill out of sight. The biker was pretty shook-up until he started laughing.

The bear had left a huge path of catsup, mustard, and other foods strewn all over then on either side of the bear butt prints all the way down the hill.

Good times! Let’s sing: The Bear Went Over the Mountain…

Now let’s recite:  How much wood would a woodchuck chuck… Ah, never mind.

Extraordinary

The only thing I can say is that life is extraordinary! I can’t believe how fast a day goes nowadays. How can that be when I am just at home not doing more than knitting (loom), hitting FaceBook, taking the dog out, doing dishes. You know, those ordinary things.

Okay, yesterday and today I felt the need to play a game or two. They’re those hidden objects games, Return to Ravenhearst and Love Story: A Beach Cottage. Every now and then I feel the need to change it up. I let time lapse between playing so I don’t get used to the games and they stay the challenge. I know, I don’t do the shoot ’em ups. Never could quite figure those out. My kids love them: EQ etc.

But I only played yesterday and today. These are the only time wasters I feel I have in my life. I do have the TV on. I do that so that I have something to distract me from my fibro. And it gives me background noise for the knitting. I need no meds if I can be distracted enough. I think that is better for me than any of the drugs the doctors have put me through.

The snow is melting. The sun was shining. That made today extraordinary. I actually stepped off the porch and walked a few feet with the dog and didn’t feel I was going to slip or soak my only-in-crocs feet. That was special. That and doing a Goggle Hang-0ut with a special friend.

Well, though I did do my Spanish for the day. I need to at least put in a few minutes on German before I go to bed. Hubby is already asleep. Vicodin is doing its job. Night, everyone, I hope your life is extraordinary, too!

Thank you, Linda G Hill for this fun blogging experience and all the help and encouragement along the way!

Complaint

When your day starts looking at this sweetie at the end of your bed, you know you have NO complaint!

Then I finished another Messy Bun/Ponytail hat:

img_20170117_1149329_rewind

Then I got to spend three hours on Google Chat with my besties M and Y. Lots of laughing! Love them so much!

I even had the chance to write a review about a book that brought back tons of memories: Betsy-Tacy Treasury

I guess you need to find the Complaint Department for some of that. I’m just feeling happy, accomplished, and loved!

And since I took two pictures of Kali, see if this doesn’t just make you want to squeeeeee!

Look at that ear! She knows I’m taking her picture but she tries to maintain the pose! Soft, lovable, sleeping sweetie!

Mercy

Since I just finished my review for Say Goodbye for Now, I am reminded that the author, Catherine Ryan Hyde who also wrote:pay-it-forward

and set up a foundation with those philosophies to pay our mercies forward. I so love that idea.

Christmas and birthdays bring up times that put us on the balancing act. So often we try to pay gift for gift translated to price for price. If we are the ones on the lower end, our present isn’t nearly as pricey or good as what was gifted to us we can feel horrible. When you have lived your life financially insecure most of those gift-giving opportunities leave you feeling sad.

This year I felt a lot better about my position. With donated yarn, I have been busy since last spring making hats and comfort items for the homeless or hospital patients. Every moment I can I am knitting or crocheting. Most of the time it is for the charity but every now and then I get to make something for my family, friends or even myself. I no longer feel guilty if the gifts for loved ones don’t get to them on or near the holiday. They all know what I am doing and feel, in some tiny way they are a part of the gift that goes elsewhere.

There are other niceties that happen to a person where a person just feels grateful but at a loss as to what to do in return. For example, the kind person that lets your car into the lane rather than make it impossible to proceed. Of course, you can’t return that favor to that person, except for maybe just a wave of thanks. But you can watch for opportunities to lets others go before you, open the door for someone.

Living a life of kindness, showing mercy when you can, has rewards of feeling good about yourself and the planet. When you are treated with goodness be thankful. And let it become a part of your being. It is playing the karma game for good.
