The Jems and Jamz Series: Books 1-2The Jems and Jamz Series: Books 1-2 by Nicole Higginbotham-Hogue
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a find on Kindle Unlimited. It was a fun light-read. I was a little bored at first, just couldn’t get into the story. I adjusted my expectations to my high school or new adult self and the story rang bells for me. It especially touched my former stage-singing self. The author captured that fear/excited feeling of performance arts. The main characters were in pop-bands. That reminded me of stories I wrote as a teen about Meeting the Beatles or other stars. Unavailable then were stories of a different kind of love than boy and girl. This treats everything the same. Love is love. There are a couple of erotic scenes that may not be appropriate for immature young adults, but other than that, I think it is a love story with many lessons, even for older folks about forgiveness and love.

Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader GinsburgNotorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Two days ago I had merely a chapter to go to finished. I feel so bad that I didn’t finish a day earlier. To finish on the day of RBG’s passing is both heartbreaking and yet feels the honor to my heart.

Irin Carmon is one of my favorite commentators on MSNBC. So when she was doing her book tour for this book I knew I would have to read it. It was well-written. So many pictures kept it visually interesting. Irin captured this brave woman’s strength and character. I feel so good to have read this at such an important time in our history.

I highly recommend this book!

Stream of Consciousness Saturday

-Tion is pronounced ‘shun’. It does not rhyme with LION.

It’s just more added to life’s mysteries, don’t you think?

Beyond the above, I haven’t a notion what I am going to write. I am feeling so tired today. Exhaustion. My brain is going through a lot of worries and thoughts. Agitation. My computer is still broken so I have to borrow my husband’s or use my Fire or tablet. Complications of computerization. Though the sky was clear with clouds today, there wasn’t a lot of smoke, but still, I am feeling congestion. It could be just autumn chilling the air or pollination.

Galaxycon.com is having online conventions. My friends and I are attending where we can. This morning I got to watch an interview with Number One and Q of Next Generation.

LoomaHat.com held a chat later on. Loomafication?

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “-tion.” Find a word that ends with “tion.” Bonus points if you start your post with it. Have fun!

Wow! It’s Friday!

Where did this week go? Seems like just yesterday was Sunday. Today was actually the first day we had blue skies. It is been so smokey from the fires in California and Oregon.

Since my computer broke down I’ve been doing everything on the phone or on my Kindle Fire. It is much harder to blog and certainly harder to put in pictures or make something interesting. But we’re working on getting a laptop working for me again. I’m trying to get ready for NaNo and all kinds of things like that so–

I just wanted to stop in and say everybody’s fine here and I hope everybody out there is doing okay. Stay safe and try to find breathable air.

Looking out my window at a cloudy clear day, very little smoke.

The Bluest EyeThe Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I wish I would have read this any other year but 2020. In a year I am reading to escape pain, depression and just trying to breathe through the smoke, this book took me deeper and sadder and more disturbed. I am sorry anyone has to deal with the many problems the main characters in this book had to go through. Though this was a historical fiction, much of the bigotry, and abuse goes on still.

Toni Morrison did the narration of her own book and kept the story alive. Her writing is known for the poetic prose. I did appreciate that, but I found it made the story even more disturbing. I do plan to read more of her books. But not right now.

Child’s Hat

I just can’t stop with the cable stitches or the decreases using the methods I described  few days ago, here.

Over the week end while thinking about bugging out and realizing that I didn’t want to leave any of my knitting supplies behind. I ran across a hat I started a while ago. I used the orange adult KB loom seen in the photo. But my new love of the decreased crown had me going crazy. That white yarn is the bumpy homespun stuff. I  could only decrease one level without it getting tight. So I thought it would be fun to transfer to half the pegs on the flexee loom. Do you ever find yourself in a project that you felt you couldn’t find your way out? Yeah, this hat caused so much actual pain and mental strain I nearly frogged it. I had to use a combination of cable needles to hold the stitches. I transferred them to the flexee. At first I got them on the wrong side. I had a plan to reverse as I went but that didn’t work out–I think it was because I forgot as I worked what my next plan was. Suddenly all the stitches were on the Flexee, even though wrong side out. But I worked the decreases anyway.Inside out! My hands weren’t ready for it. It hurt a lot to work from that direction. But I am proud of the end result!

This hat will go to Hugger Hats, the charity. I hope it helps keeps someone’s head warm this winter.

I mentioned thinking of bugging out; still not ready and hope I don’t have to. We seem pretty safe here, I think. But our Writing Group was cancelled as our friends in Paisley have had to bug out. That is a couple hours away from here, but still it seems Oregon is on fire nearly everywhere. My son has his bug out ready. I’m getting more organized so I think tomorrow I’ll set up the first emergency bag ready and set things up so that if there is time yarny stuff can go along with foods and electronics. And art supplies. and books and journals and music and keyboard and recorders, There’s a reason I have so much stuff, I like doing lots of thihngs. How do people narrow it down?

Thank you all for thoughts and prayers for our west coast and for me and my family. I am so grateful that my adult children are well. My brother  and husband and I are doing well.

But I am writing this on my tablet because my computer keeps going out. We think it is a bad charging cord so we’ll try to get a new one soon. Meanwhile, I can barely read what I’m typing. I hope you can decipher it all. I hope life is treating you all well in spite of it being 2020.

What the Wind KnowsWhat the Wind Knows by Amy Harmon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My cousin recommended this wonderful book. I am so sad to leave it. Yes, there were tears at the end but not so much for sad ending, but sad because the story ended. I think I am going to have read/listen to it again.

Amy Harmon writing kept me so engaged that I didn’t want to go to sleep. I was lucky to hear the narration of Saskia Maarleveld , Will Damron. I prefer to hear the language of the Irish spoken by those who can speak it best.

If you are crazy about Outlander, like I am and time travel by any means, this is your book.

I would write a longer review but I am on my tablet so must keep this brief. All I can say is I highly recommend this book, expecially using Audible!

Stream of Consciousness Saturday

I hate collars. I feel like I am choking. I don’t mind a turtleneck as long as it is loose. But most collars are constricting. That includes necklaces. The weight of the necklace even if a long one makes my neck and back hurt. It is probably my imagination, but I have quit wearing anything restricting, and that includes on my neck.

I don’t know why this prompt didn’t grab me in any way, but there it is. I went to Pixabay and found a cute dove. I think I will show you this sweetie.
