Review: The Barriers by Katie French

The Barriers (Breeders #5)The Barriers by Katie French
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the fifth book in the Breeder series. Dystopia is different in any sci-fi I’ve ever read. This whole story from book one on has been quite the ride.

The characters by this book five are well rounded and though many each has a purpose. I felt myself nearly on the edge of my bed and far from sleep hoping for the best for these young people and their loved ones. There were a couple nights I had to force myself to put away the Fire at three or even four in the morning.

Thank goodness these are on Kindle Unlimited because when this book ended I could grab the next!

Sunday Meditations

I’ve been trying to reduce my cortisol, um, belly-fat. I’m already eating my intermittent fasting/Keto/low carbs/high fat diet. I’ll know tomorrow how well my progress has been. My husband is sure I’ve lost more than 25 pounds. My clothes are falling off, unless they are the old smaller sizes.

Still my belly seems more than should be at this size. Cortisol is caused by stress. Not that I think my retired life is stressful. But this last year has had its effect. So I’m starting to wake with Headspace Meditations. Either on Netflix or YouTube.

Then after my two days of eye appointments, I plan to add these yoga lessons.

Though we’ve seen clearer skies the last few days I haven’t begun the None2run program, but for now I have to call it walking. My new shoes are begging me to get out there. I didn’t want to start on a rainy or muddy, windy day.

I’m still playing with the hula hoop, light weights, band stretching. Just trying to get ready for real workouts.

Puzzles are another passion of mine. As long as cheating is allowed.

For many years this has been my mindsuck: (Sudoku)

I like it because I can see all of any one number in the puzzle by clicking on the one I’m curious about. Like this: (chosen Sudoku number)

And though I’ve chosen to stay with the moderate level, I’m sure that my actual level is beginner. I know this because I find these hard:

Outside of filling each empty box with penciled in possible numbers I rarely see the answer until the page is full of eraser smudges. And even then… see the clothespin? Yeah, holding the solution page ready for peeking. Yet, I’m obsessed and feel that someday I might get it. That idea in itself is the real puzzle!

And puzzle me this, my other non-electronic fun is:

Yes, that is a clothespin to the answers. The thing about crosswords is you need to be a mind reader. Did the puzzle maker mean the vegetable or the actor? Is it spelled the way we’re taught in school or in another language or some abbreviation of some company name?

Still, I can spend hours in puzzlement about the brains of puzzle makers versus my ADD/dyslexic 71 year-old brain.

They say these are supposed to keep our minds nimble.

In the background I have Beauty and the Beast on. This is it’s last day on Netflix. I’m only on season one and there are four. Why I chose to wait until the last minute for everything is another puzzle. By the way, I would normally plug in a trailer here but electricity and internet are intermittent.

On a day like today:

A proper Oregon day of rain!

Nothing is better than:

A cuppa

And a puzzle.

Finished Friday, hat

I love this decrease on the Flexee fine-gauge.

Another mohair charity hat.

Flexee fine-gauge loom with beginning of brim.

There are 80 pegs for my last couple hats. This one is less ‘fancy’ than the last. No cables. Just flat knit stitching throughout.

The brim is a fold up. I like those best as the double layer of fabric helps keep those ears warm.

I use this method to decrease the crown.

After doing the six rounds Kristen Mangus of #GoodKnitKisses shows here, I do six more by doing this: Once the loom is down to every other peg has a loop, I move one loop over to join a friend. That leaves the link beside it empty. I pop the empty out and resnap together the ends of the loom left dangling. I do that all the way around the loom making it half as large as it was before. I think that means I now have 40 pegs. Now I redo all six steps that Kristen show us.

By the way the closest the phone camera got to the color of this soft yarn is the one with the crown of the hat. It is more of a pinkish apricot than the orange that the camera shows.

Throwback Thursday.

Such a sweet memory for my friend, Willow.

Mum, Me and Steve. © willowdot21.

When I was a little girl I was frightened of dogs. My mum and Dad decided to get me a dog for Christmas. The dog arrived on Christmas Eve after I had gone to bed. Somehow the whole family managed to keep it a secret from me.

As I said the dog arrived at Christmas and Dad being Dad and an Irish Catholic

Steve was a beautiful dog, red fox in colour with a white chest and a couple of socks. He was a Hienz fifty seven, a mixed breed…

The Walking Dead, Vol. 17: Something to FearThe Walking Dead, Vol. 17: Something to Fear by Robert Kirkman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really wish I could have read this before the television series. I kept relating to a couple of episodes that this issue contains. On the show, this was the hardest one to deal with. As it was, it was pretty horrendous with all the blood and guts, just different.

Negan says the same things and does the same things. Oh, Negan!

What is interesting about this series, either the TV or the comic versions, is seeing how people adapt to a world without society’s rules over the years. Survival looks differently to each individual, and you choose the tribe you feel reflects you and keeps you safe. Watching it through the filter of COVID19 and how that has separated our tribes show that Robert Kirkman understood a lot more than a comic book writer should. The story is great written, drawn, or acted out.

I can’t wait until I can afford my next one.

The Personal LibrarianThe Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I first started reading, well, listening to this book, I think I would have rated this with three to four stars. Robin Miles, the narrator, presented Belle da Costa Greene as a snooty woman that I couldn’t relate to in any way.

Now, having finished, I am rating it five stars. Stick with it through the whole story. The authors will explain it so that the picture in your mind accepts the things that didn’t quite gel or maybe you didn’t like as you read/heard it.

I like herstorical fiction because I hate history classes. I like learning what could have happened to a woman in our past. From what I learned at the end of this book, much research went into what made a fascinating story of a possible interesting life.

More can be found in the blurb for this book. I highly recommend the read or listen to the book.

The remarkable, little-known story of Belle da Costa Greene, J.P. Morgan’s personal librarian – who became one of the most powerful women in New York despite the dangerous secret she kept in order to make her dreams come true, from ‘New York Times’ best-selling author Marie Benedict and acclaimed author Victoria Christopher Murray.

In her late 20s, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J.P. Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts, books, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture on the New York society scene and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps build a world-class collection.

But Belle has a secret, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard and well-known advocate for equality, Belle’s complexion isn’t dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white – her complexion is dark because she is African American.

‘THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN’ tells the story of an extraordinary woman, famous for her intellect, style, and wit, and shares the lengths to which she must go – for the protection of her family and her legacy – to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives. ”

Delta Flight 15 on 9/11

This is the love I want to see for our fellow humans.

Lauren's avatar❀ Welcome To LSS Attitude of Gratitude❀

This came across my email today. I had to share after I cleared my tears.

A MUST read! A great story.
It is 20 years since 9/11 and here is a wonderful story about that terrible day.
Jerry Brown Delta Flight 15… (true story)Here is an amazing story from a flight attendant on Delta Flight 15, written following 9-11:

On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, we were about 5 hours out of Frankfurt, flying over the North Atlantic. All of a sudden the curtains parted and I was told to go to the cockpit, immediately, to see the captain. As soon as I got there I noticed that the crew had that “All Business” look on their faces.
The captain handed me a printed message. It was from Delta’s main office in Atlanta and simply read, “All airways over the Continental United States are closed to commercial air traffic…
