Stream of Consciousness Saturday, Bowl

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “bowl.” Use it as a noun or a verb—use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

They say life is a bowl of cherries.

Not today.

I woke in the middle of the night for a potty break. As I opened the door, I stepped in a puddle. Ugh!

We are religious about dripping faucets when temps are predicted for below 40, so this was a surprise. Nothing is so yucky as schlepping through a soggy floor. Then the wet pants leg when pulling up pj pant. Yech!

Now 8 couldn’t sleep. Dry clothes change, then a brain that wouldn’t stop catastrophizing.

So I got up and read in the living room. The sock I was working on needed a full frogging.

Five hours later my brother got busy removing shower walls and assessing the problem.

I got busy bringing all the things I could to the living room to get it out of the restroom off the wet floor. And a chance to clean and organize.

My brother and husband went to our few stores to find the parts they needed.

Around 7pm I was eating a bowl of popcorn to help me warm up. My husband complained of chest pains. The VA told him to go to the ER. 150 miles from home. We are here now.

So far all seems okay. All his numbers are good. I’m thinking coffee. It’s 10:30. Even if we left now we wouldn’t get home til midnight. Oh the joy of living in the country.

Flexee fine-gauge wool socks were farther along. The one on the bottom was that full ball finished. I didn’t like something so I had to tink back to the white part. I’ll have to do that to the top sock, too.
Ready to learn Turn heel.
This is the pattern I’m following in my knitting class. My next step is ‘Turn heel’ on the first sock.
Sock 2 cuff finished. Now on to the leg.
HiyaHiya Fliers sock cuff finished. Now I need to watch the YouTube for the next part.
One bamboo sock nearly to the heel. Sock number 2 nearly there, too. (CinDWood sock looms)
Almost halfway done with the Sunflowers.

I’m learning so much while having a great time. Oh. And here comes NaNoWriMo! First character is nearly formed. Pensées is the working title. Olive Odette Pensées is my first character. The story is starting to form. I can’t wait! Who’s joining me?

Two weeks!

Live Wire: Long-Winded Short StoriesLive Wire: Long-Winded Short Stories by Kelly Ripa
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a fun book. Sure, Kelly comes to our living room before coffee, way overdressed for our sloppy morning PJs. I think she had coffee way earlier than we did. Especially here on the west coast. Just a quick aside: Aren’t you tired of waking up to New York if you live here in the west?

Anyway, back to the book. I had the Audible, and I highly recommend ‘reading’ the book this way. Ms. Ripa narrates with the occasional Mark Consuelos addendum. In his voice. You miss that fun interaction between husband and wife in the paper copy.

Not many books hit on the empty nest issues. When you are young and pregnant, there are times when you are overwhelmed by books about expecting or dealing with kids. But the issues of offspring moving into adulthood and how it affects the people left behind are few.

I love that the story is broken into many little stories rather than a point-by-point history autobiography. I highly recommend this bit of entertainment.

Making Monday

My first try with 4 double-pointed needles. Tomorrow I am taking my first lesson. I need to learn how to fix mistakes, how to make the heel and toe. This soft wool yarn will make gifts.
My first attempt at making a sock with the HiyaHiya Fliers. This may make a small solo sock that will be frogged when I have enough tiny yarn to make a full pair.
Still love my Flexee Fine-Gauge loom for making socks. They are easy on my hands. This yarn is very soft. To be gifts.
Bamboo/cotton on the CindDWood sock loom. Soft non-allergenic yarn for gifts.
About 1/4 finished.

I haven’t touched the toys. I just don’t like the sewing and stuffing. Mastering the inner child of the 72 year old is harder than when I was younger! I have a similar problem with straightening, sealing, and framing the Diamond Paintings. And I haven’t the foggiest idea who would want the paintings.

Too bad there isn’t an assembly-line set up for those who love to sew, stuff, line, and frame products. Hobbies should make happiness not more work!

Per Linda:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “happy place.” Write the first thing that comes to mind when you think of “happy place.” Have fun!

In my heart of hearts, this is my happy place:

Since that is far, far away and impossible to get to, this is my happy place:

It keeps me out of trouble and gives me peace.

The Book Woman of Troublesome CreekThe Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Quite an interesting read. Even though I read these out of sequence, reading book two first, I found I like both stories. They were very similar, and with the same narrator, Katie Schorr, I felt both main characters were the same. Still, when I took a moment, I found my way back to the current person. Her voice fits the characters and keeps the story going.

Until these stories, I don’t think I remember hearing about the blue-skinned people of Kentucky until these books. But what doesn’t surprise me is the bigotry of the willfully ignorant. Though the main character does everything in her power to help others, some see a minor issue as something to hate a person for.

What is fun is watching the main characters of the two books grow in their abilities as librarians, teachers, women, and riders of an onery mule.

This story is worth reading, even if you have to read this out of order.
