Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear SugarTiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar by Cheryl Strayed

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One day, in the last couple of months, my daughter kidnapped me so I could spend a week back in Reno. It was one of those serendipitous things that made me very happy. I got to spend time with her and with other family and friends.

My daughter loves to listen to podcasts on long trips. When she learned that I had read and watched Wild, by Cheryl Strayed, she pulled up the Dear Sugar podcasts and we enjoyed a long listen.

Once back at home I found the Dear Sugar websites and other books by Cheryl Strayed. I looked at the eBook/Overdrive local library copies. I found this copy but it was just an eBook with no text-to-speech and no audio version. I tried very hard to enjoy the book. There was wonderful advice given here.

I wanted to keep reading past the mid-point that I thought I got to, but with no way to listen it was hard to read. I will try to keep an eye out for the Audible or Kindle with TTS to read later. Besides, most of it was written for younger people. I played the kind of game I used to play with the Dear Abby advice column, see if I can give the same advice the writer does. I was pleasantly surprised that Ms. Strayed gave more personal answers and helped in deeper ways than Abby or her sister Ann Landers ever did.

I think this is a wonderful book for young people to have. I think Dear Sugar is a good podcast for those under forty. I hope to find this book again in an easier form for me to read.

Third Life: Taken (Life First, #3)Third Life: Taken by R.J. Crayton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a good ending to a good series. It was good because it offered plenty to think about. When a government can tell a person what they can or can’t do with their bodies, where does it end? Can they make you give up a kidney because it can save someone else? And who is held responsible when something goes wrong? And though there are scientists that can prove or disprove as much in the scientific realm as theologians can do the same with the Holy Books who can we trust?

Let’s say you decided not to give up your kidney. You feel you need it as much as anyone else. Where does your right to live stand in comparison to someone else’s? What if the government decided who should or shouldn’t have babies? Can you see what a sticky-wicket of a world it would be?

In this last book, which makes me sad to say as I will miss these characters, there are a wedding, a kidnapping, and healing while running for one’s life–or that of another. The action picks up and isn’t as slow as book two.

It has been nearly a month since I read this but I feel good reviewing as I feel I remember quite a lot. At least it made a big enough impact for me that I could remember the gist. **SMILE**

Now a quick question for the author: What was the purpose of the hidden room? Did I miss something? Or did I imagine a greater purpose than that given to us? Could there be more in store for us?

Anyway, I highly recommend this series. Sure there is romance but it doesn’t take over the main story and sometimes adds to it.

Second Life (Life First #2)Second Life by R.J. Crayton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I found this second book to be slower and not nearly as exciting as the first book. But then how do you compete with emergency skydiving? I tried to be patient realizing we were getting to know other characters better.

Having a disabled person as the main character was a plus. I love it when authors take a chance with something other than perfect people and let us see characters who are different.

Still, the first half of the book took place in two rooms. THAT was boring! Sure we needed to get to know our characters’ thoughts but there had to be another way to do that.

Towards the end, things picked up and felt more like the first book. Knuckle were whitened, nails were bitten. And I was praying that there would be no cliffhanger. And there wasn’t. The book left you in a safe enough place but you knew there was more that needed to be done. Luckily, I had book three lined up and took off with that one!

Something I need to add here is another original idea of these three books is the moral dilemma similar to abortion or capital punishment. What if we were forced to give up our organs to those we match who are dying? This book takes further into what if by being forced we become disabled or otherwise harmed? Who is held responsible? I love books that make you think and this series does do that while presenting well-developed characters and lots of adventure.

Shoot, I just decided that I need to raise this from three to four stars, just due to my own review. I will remember this series long into the future that hopefully doesn’t have the dilemmas presented here.

Tiny Bear

Mothered a tiny bear today!20170514_220559

But truth of the day, I am so glad to have birthed my real babies over thirty years ago. They are still the love and light of my life.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

And that is two days of work. Still, need to work on these as I learn ways to make them look special, but that is the fun part. And I think it shouldn’t take this long, but mistakes, frogging or tinking take a lot of time but teach ways to avoid the same later.

Body Parts

I have been busy all day. I’ve made four legs with feet, a body and most of a head. The pattern called for two skeins. In all the donated yarn I have no two skeins are the same. So I found some fuzzy rose and a gray with white spots. I am on the trunk which is the end of the elephant in the making. But the gray ran out. It is too dark to go looking for something to finish the trunk and make the toy tonight. I hope I can figure out something. But here’s the gruesome sight.

Poor little elephant never had a chance! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Sunset and Moon

Just took Kali outside. It was gorgeous. I don’t know if these pics will do it justice but I can only try to share this beauty.

In the east, the moon.

In the west, the leftovers of another great sunset.

Black-bottom bears are vegetarians who need scarves all year round.

That was the one line I felt I would tease with. Trying to play with Linda G Hill and her Wednesday fun.

Now for the rest of the story. Boring one? I ran out of the raspberryย mohair-ish yarn. No labels on most of the donated yarn so I don’t know how much I have or what it is made of. So I found some black yarn that seemed to go okay.

But the story in my head goes like this:

20170510_155925

“Please type this for me.” Whispered the Raspberry Bear.

“Okay,” I said fingers readied to transpose.

“I am Raz.” That’s what my mother called me. But I am sure somebody will soon give me another name. I am a black-bottomed bear. Don’t ever mistake us for Black Bears. They have long claws and can be dangerous.” Raz shutters.

“When we are born, we spend most of our time in the raspberry bushes. We love raspberries, well and other berries. We come in a variety of shades of berry colors and stay that way until we are grown. Then for some reason, our bottoms and legs grow black. Do you think it is due to climbing mulberry trees?”

20170510_155905

“Why don’t your noses and mouths become black?” I asked.

“Well,” Raz starts. “Since we only eat veggies, we eat many different leaves and fruits. So maybe it just rubs off?” Raz starts to shiver.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“I’m cold.”

“But it is 73 degrees!” I say.

“We are vegetarians, we black-bottomed bears. We tend to need more warmth and a lot of love.”

I got busy with my knitting and donned Raz with a scarf. I hope it tides her over until someone adopts her. Here are a couple shots for Raz to model her new scarf.

Raz wants to thank Scarlett Royal for helping her come into being.

Share Your World–A Day Late

041514-sywbanner

When youโ€™re alone at home, do you wear shoes, socks, slippers, or go barefoot?

Alone or not, and as often as I can get by with it I am barefoot. Our yard is full of rocks and sticker so I do wear my sandals (or Crocs) out there, and most everywhere from the time of 40 degrees and upward. In the winter socks with or without Crocs.

What was your favorite food when you were a child?

Grilled cheese sandwiches.ย Still a favorite, pizza wins if there is a contest but I could live on on GCS.

Are you a listener or talker?

That depends on how comfortable I am–Really scared shuts me down. Somewhat uncomfortable I talk too much. With good friends and family, I think I can give and take with the best of them.

Favorite thing to (pick one): ย Photograph? ย Write? Or Cook?

Write. I hate cooking and am allergic to cameras of any kind. Loom knitting is starting to take over my passion for writing or making music but it will eventually calm down and I’ll find my balance.

Optional Bonus question: ย What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

So grateful to have lived through another month of weather weirdness. But seeing that there is hope of Spring ahead. We are starting to leave windows open during the day! WooHoo!!!!! Oh, the bear that was supposed to be finished Monday? I ran out of yarn and had to get creative (donated yarn has no labels so don’t know how much I have. And this new pattern had me tinking and even frogging to get what I have. Tomorrow I will sew him/her together and tell the fantasy and real story behind him/her. I’d show a picture but, guts and things–yech!

Sorry to be a day late on this. Share Your World is the baby of Cee of Cee’s Photography.

The Handmaid's TaleThe Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As much as I hated people assigning books for me to read as a teen, I think this should be one for everyone. It was eerily too close to much that is happening today. Men/young boys need to learn what women think of them. Women need to get stronger and make sure they are holding up half the sky. There is no sense of majority men in politics leaving the other half no representation.

I was fortunate to have a free credit on Audible so I picked up the Special Edition with Claire Danes as narrator and a host of other voices. It certainly made the reading experience come to life, as regrettable a life it was to read about. I did read along on the Kindle version that my husband shared with me. I knew I had to read it before watching the Hulu version.

Many have told me to read this book in the past. I wish I would have gotten around to it before now so that this would be a second reading. It is too heavy, scary to read again so soon. Yet I may have to again before the year is over. I want to make it a part of my being, pull the wisdom down to the cellular level.

After the book, there is another section with a man covering the tapes found by our main character. It is set in the far future and after much study, they are analyzing the tapes and what kind of world the producer of the tapes lived in. I found that part of the writing so different and amazing. The vocabulary so different than the rest of the book. I have read poetry by Margaret Atwood and then this book. So I find it fascinating from a writer’s viewpoint that a person could have such a range in their writing skills.

After that (epilogue?) Ms. Atwood talks about writing the book and how her experiences played a big part in how the story became so real. Again, I was entranced!

Please don’t watch the series before reading this. Though they are doing a nice job, they still aren’t getting the depth of feelings that you get from the book. In fact, the first scene is actually from the end of the book. I found that just wrong. But maybe as time goes on it will make sense why they did that. It certainly is the cautionary tale for all of us who have taken our freedoms (even the ones we haven’t attained yet) for granted.

Please read this book, with the Special Edition Audible if you can.
