Working Stiff: Two Years, 262 Bodies, and the Making of a Medical Examiner by Judy Melinek

First of all, don’t read this book before going to sleep. Or you won’t, especially from the part about 9/11 on. Still, it is such an engaging read. And the narrator, Tanya Eby, made the book lively, even though much of it is about death.
If Grey’s Anatomy has taught me anything about the life of a potential surgeon, it is the lack of sleep and how dangerous that lack can be for the doctor and the patient. It is that lack of sleep and trying to be a young mother that the author, Judy Melinek, realized she needed a different path, even though this path was nearly finished for the author. But all that training did lead her to be a Medical Examiner in New York.
We Americans hide from sex and death. We can talk of taxes until the cows come home. But of the two topics, death seems the least discussed. And that is too bad. We need to know about that part of life for ourselves and our loved ones.
If you are a writer, this book can be quite the reference. I can see many ways the book can be used to write a mystery or lend credence to a fatality in the novel.
I highly recommend this book, especially in audio form. I was lucky to pick it up from the library on Libby.

My friend, a Pirates of the Caribbean fan like me, suggested this for fun. Her book club had just enjoyed it.
But after the serious reading I had been doing of late, this was just not my cup of tea. At least at first. By the end, my sense of humor came back, and I had a hard time reading it before bed without letting Laugh out Loud moments escape me.
My copy came from the library on the Libby app. It was the audio version and the narrator, Elizabeth Knoweldon, was a hoot to listen to. I loved her accent and how she adjusted her voice according to the character.

Writing my memoirs is like ambling back through my life. 72 years of shambles and rambling through brambles. Ouch! or take a gamble with this choice or that. Though it is fun to revisit with my grandparents and aunts and uncles, revisiting death or car accidents can sometimes feel like it just happened even if it’s been decades since the actual occurrence. Still smelling the cedar of my grandparent’s closets or the ever-present scent of laundry soap can make me feel warm and secure. I have learned new ways to find my center.
Remember that friend you went to Renaissance Faire with? Remember a day of laughing while sitting in a creek on a hot day? So many memories to take that stroll. I do love a good amble!
Something else I’m working on. And it really is work! I’m going through all the Doctor Whos. I’ve managed to get to season three. Good thing I’m not watching. It’s mostly background while I write.
JunoWriMo is done as of today. I reached my lesser goal of 15K words added to my memoir, Moving. After two months of writing, I have accumulated 55,394 words, and I still have much more to write about. I don’t know how many of you have written a memoir, but it is far different for me than fiction. I just wrote the word friction and laughed. Yeah, either way, the writing is about friction. So my next part, I will make a new goal for CampNaNo and see how far it takes me.
I am trying to keep it about me, this book. That sounds selfish, but it is the only way I can keep from throwing others under a bus, of sorts. Did they do me wrong? Yeah. But many have grown, and many have left this plane of existence. So I am just trying to claim my own issues and experiences without awfully implicating others. Still, there are some that I haven’t figured out how to tell the story without the other person involved.
At the same time, I want to use this writing as a memory enhancer or therapy session. So I will have to remove names to protect the innocent or those who need their anonymity,
Just to give an idea as to how far into my life I’ve written, I am on the thirteenth move, I am well into my forties, and my oldest is now a young adult. So there are another thirty-something years to write about. Though this second half of life isn’t nearly as full of excitement, agitation, or losses as the first half.
The biggest fun I have had writing this is trying to tour through the homes as I get to that part of my life. It amazes me what I remember and what I have forgotten. It’s nice to pick my adult children’s brains for details I might have forgotten, and if not theirs, my brother’s. And then there’s that weird thing that happens. Every person recalls an incident differently, sometimes widely different than each other. That Mandela effect plays strongly on all of us. Heck, that plays a part when you send two people to the store with grocery lists, and they come home with none of the essential items.
But then we hardly agree on what day of the week, right? Hence, Linda G. Hill’s What Day Is It Anyway prompt. Several times today it has been Saturday. Other times it feels like a Monday. Maybe it is due to the long trip to Redmond we had to take on Tuesday. That has screwed up the space-time continuum for me this week.
Back to the writing. I think I will set up my CampNaNo goal for 15k more. That will allow for some special things I am planning for this month. I get to see family and friends! Yay!
