The Parrot and the Igloo: Climate and the Science of DenialThe Parrot and the Igloo: Climate and the Science of Denial by David Lipsky
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I am really not finished yet. I am at 99%, but I wanted to write this review before closing the laptop.

This is highly political, but David Lipsky seems to have no favorites. He has much to say about the denial on both sides of the aisle. I love science, but this proves how human ambition can kill science and the people who would benefit most from knowing the answers, however they proved.

Mike Chamberlain (Narrator) did a reasonably good job reading the book, but there wasn’t much to work with. It seemed the thing I hated most about this book was how the author chose to pretty up the story with words or illustrations that seemed to entertain him. I found these annoying, and it took me out of the story he was trying to tell. Not to say this is fiction. It was history in light of science and politics.

There are various opinions about this book in the reviews. Maybe you will love it? Or not? Try for yourself to see.

The Midwife's ApprenticeThe Midwife’s Apprentice by Karen Cushman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I wish books didn’t need tags like ‘middle grade’ or ‘young adult’ as this book had so much depth for all ages. Maybe somewhere, we could say, middle grades could read this. Young adults can relate. But I think this would make a great read-aloud to share. A teacher or parent could do the reading. There are a lot of conversation starters built in that people should enjoy.

For someone who entertained the occupation of midwifery, this called me as much as the show, ‘Call the Midwife.’ The miracle of birth and mothering are passions of mine.

This was a Libby Kindle that I was able to use text-to-speech. I think I would have loved a narrator, but the TTS did a great job all the way through. Can anyone tell me why TTS can’t say ‘finger’ but rather says ‘finJay’? That was the only word I had to take a moment to understand. But that was okay. Your brain adjusts to small inconsistencies like that.

Apparently, there are discussion booklets and book group helps. I would love to have been a part of one of those.

I am now a fan of Karen Cushman and can’t wait to read more of her books. I hope you like her, too.

Dragon Mage Academy The Complete Series: Books 1-7 Box SetDragon Mage Academy The Complete Series: Books 1-7 Box Set by Cordelia Castel
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I wanted to like this. I did trudge through as there were threads of plot I wanted to see to the end. But I had the series on Kindle with text-to-speech on speed level 3. It almost sounded like the chipmunks were reading it, but I could follow the storyline and stay with it. I had pushed it aside, but I ran out of stuff to read for a moment, and there it was, so I tried again.

The characters were unrelatable. And I don’t know about you, but as much as I loved seeing books of girls defeating the male-dominated societies by pretending to be boys, I prefer stories of females making it in equalitarian societies. All things being equal, I love the dragons in this story. They are intelligent and bond with humans to get things done.

Go read the reviews. They are quite mixed. You may love this book. You may hate it. At least you’ll have a decent read for a few nights.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: β€œmostly/at least.” Use one, use ’em both, use ’em any way you’d like. Bonus points if they both appear in your post. Enjoy!

I’m mostly feeling better. At least my fever is less than it has been. And mostly we have the Internet. Well, sort of. Tomorrow’s church service in Zoom will be the test. If not at least we can watch it on Facebook. Not as interactive as I like it, as you can chat with others in Zoom.

This next week I will start deleting and deciding if I want to go to a higher level on WordPress. I seem to be in delete mode for a lot of my programs. Heck, I need to start eliminating junk around the house, too.

Mostly WordPress. At least the motivation is there. Stay to see if you think follow-through will happen.

Yeah, pictures in my WP still work.

What Can I Do?

WordPress won’t let me post any more pictures. Do I have to buy into a higher level? If I can’t afford it, and I somehow figure out how to delete early pictures, will early blogs be weirdly pictureless? How do you all WordPress?

Ella Minnow Pea: A Novel in LettersElla Minnow Pea: A Novel in Letters by Mark Dunn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I better include the blurb for this one.

Ella Minnow Pea is a girl living happily on the fictional island of Nollop off the coast of South Carolina. Nollop was named after Nevin Nollop, author of the immortal pangram,* β€œThe quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Now Ella finds herself acting to save her friends, family, and fellow citizens from the encroaching totalitarianism of the island’s Council, which has banned the use of certain letters of the alphabet as they fall from a memorial statue of Nevin Nollop.

As the letters progressively drop from the statue they also disappear from the novel. The result is both a hilarious and moving story of one girl’s fight for freedom of expression, as well as a linguistic tour de force sure to delight word lovers everywhere.

*pangram: a sentence or phrase that includes all the letters of the alphabet

~~~
Correspondence is the only way this story is told. Letters between friends and family tell the story.
So many creative writing ideas are presented in this book. As I mentioned, letter writing is one. Another emerges as bits of the alphabet are outlawed. Try writing without certain letters.
What I loved was how vocabulary improved with fewer letters. But towards the end, subletters are needed, ph is F, etc. Sometimes, it takes a moment to figure out the new word. So, how would you write if you couldn’t use certain letters?
At first, I tried to read the book through the Libby app. But I found I just couldn’t track properly to stay with it. So, I bought the Kindle version with Whispersync. That worked very well. There are several actors reading. That gave the story an even bigger boost. As the new words were formed, having Kindle set up with a larger font and spacing helped me understand the words presented. The readers were excellent at ensuring the reader/listener knew the word was spelled incorrectly, but the contents connected the communication.
I highly recommend this book for fun and creativity.
